Bones chosen Skyline all-star Phoenix High senior Jennifer Bones was asked to switch her usual role for the Pirates this past season. And although uneasy about the move from the perimeter to the post early in the season, Bones took to the move so well she was rewarded recently with a first-team selection on the Skyline Conference girls basketball all-star team. "She's been a perimeter player most of her career with us, but we needed to keep her along with (Tara) Curtis and (Jessica) Prisbrey on floor at the same time," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "At first she still thought she had to assume the responsibility of being a scorer, but after our first North Valley loss, I convinced her that if she did other things inside and provided leadership it would make our team more successful." Bones took those words to heart and was an integral part of the Pirates' drive for the Class 3A state playoffs. Phoenix finished tied for second in the Skyline standings at 10-4 and went 1-2 in the state tourney. It's season record was 15-11. Other first-team selections were Carrie Knox of Henley, Snow Staples of Illinois Valley, Shantay Sabin of Lakeview, Charlotte Beck of North Valley and Dena Young of Mazama, who was also named player of the year. Prisbrey, a junior, was named to the second team, while Phoenix's Curtis, Beth Nikodym and Maria Gonzalez earned honorable mention. "I think it was fitting that when you look at our kids who were nominated, they were all of our starters," said Walker. "We really had a pretty balanced team all year, and it was pretty balanced in the voting, too. It was kind of nice to see the league felt the same way."
