DANCE Dancing People Company celebrates the solstice The dance troupe's annual show marks winter's longest night Dancing People Company will dance its way through the rituals of the season — including the darkest night of winter, spring's awakenings and the energy and intensity of summer — during its ninth annual Winter Solstice Show and community dance. Robin Stiehm, director of the Ashland-based modern dance company, selected three pieces for the show: "Ice Crystals," a reflection of the crisp clarity of winter; "Shining Night Sky," a lushly choreographed piece with five dancers that evokes the feeling of waking up after a long winter; and "Grassfire," a fierce and energetic piece that celebrates summer. Company dancers are Brianna Rae Johnson, Erin Drummond and Veronica DeWitt. "Choreography, or the actual creation of steps, often starts with an emotion that I want to express through movement," Stiehm says. "I think about how a dancer's body moves and how dancers physically relate to each other. Much in the same way you would observe people on the street and form perspectives of what might be happening, you can look at a choreographed piece and see that the dancers' relationship is. "We've presented these pieces in the past," Stiehm says. "So we're calling this a retrospective show. That and because two former company dancers, Emily Abrahams and Alonzo Moore, will join us." "Call Back the Sun," DPC's ninth annual winter show, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20-21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. Tickets cost $17, $10 for ages 12 and younger. Tickets for the Sunday matinee cost $15, $10 for ages 12 and younger. All tickets can be purchased at Music Coop, 268 E. Main St., online at dancingpeople.com or at the door. Call 541-488-9683 or email [email protected] for information.  The program will open with African Dance Ashland performing a harvest dance, "Kassa," a piece filled with rhythmic drumming and movement. Along with DPC's selections, Curtain Climbers Aerial Arts, accompanied by pianist Dean Angermeier, will perform. Also look for Robin Bryant’s HeartDance, a dance performance group from Southern Oregon University and singing aerialist Vanessa Nowitsky. This year's show also will be joined by a variety of musicians. Singer Cornflower will provide accompaniment for "Ice Crystals," and Uphonic Sound System will play ambient grooves and riffs for a piece performed by the company and members of a community dance workshop. An open dance party will follow the evening shows, with music by Cornflower, Dean and Tina Angermeier, Uphonic Sound System. Late last year, Stiehm and her dancers were hired as resident dancers to teach and perform modern dance at University of Oregon. After the one-week residency, the company presented selections from its repertoire, "Aspects of the Heart," "Leaving" and "Wild and Private." In June of 2013, the company visited Seattle to participate in the Seattle International Dance Festival, on the Cornish College of the Arts campus, sponsored by Cyrus Khambatta Dance studio, and in 2012, DPC visited St. Petersburg, Russia, to perform as part of the annual Open Look Dance Festival.  "Our experiences have made me proud of what we've accomplished in Southern Oregon," Stiehm says.
