Putnam rallies past Ashland in state opener MILWAUKIE - The Ashland Grizzlies let a 4-0 lead slip away as Rex Putnam came from behind to claim a 5-4 first-round victory in the Class 4A state softball playoffs. Errors by both teams played a crucial role in the outcome. Putnam errors led to two Ashland runs in the fourth inning. Catherine Clason's double and a fielder's choice extended the Grizzlies' lead to their 4-0. Putnam (21-3) battled back when Diana Whiteacker hit a three-run double to tie the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth inning. "We had them scared but not scared enough," Ashland coach Rich Beugli said. "It was a good close game." An error also provided the winning run. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Putnam's Sarah Thomas hit a single up the middle then stole second base. The next batter dribbled the ball in front of the plate. Angela Heine, Ashland's catcher made a swift play on the ball and threw it into right field, allowing Thomas to score. Ashland (12-12) was unable to score in the top of the seventh. Whiteacker went 3-for-3 with two singles and a three-run double. Tanya Rose also went 3-for-3 including a triple. Whiteacker and Rose accounted for six of Putnam's seven hits. ROSEBURG 3, TUALATIN 0 - At Roseburg, Sara Jones tossed a no-hitter and Shannon Burmeister provided the offensive spark in Roseburg's opening-round playoff victory. Jones (10-4) struck out four and walked one, while Burmeister provided two hits and one RBI. The Indians (20-7) scored in the first inning on three straight two-out singles. Southern Oregon Conference co-most valuable player Erin Goodell got the winning rally started, then Burmeister and Molly Liston followed with base hits. In the second, Laura Mitchell reached on a two-base error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice. Burmeister's RBI single accounted for the second run in the inning. W - Jones (10-4). L - Edwards. Class 3A JUNCTION CITY 4, ROGUE RIVER 3 - At Rogue River, Rogue River rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the playoff game into extra innings. Junction City, the Sky Em No. 3 team, scored the winning run in the eighth when Jenn Campbell opened with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on Lindsey Smith's single. Rogue River (20-6) mounted a tying rally when Jill Artoff smacked a one-out double in the seventh. Melissa Day kept the pressure on with a single and Brittany Artoff delivered an RBI single. K.K. Smith reached on an error to load the bases and Kristi Frederick came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 3. Pinch-runner Angela Winfrey was thrown out at home attempting to score the winning run on Frederick's hit. The Chieftains cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Allison Bailey singled, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on an error. Rachel Pierce suffered the loss despite combining with Kim Hamilton to give up only four hits.
