Reno cashes in for Panthers South Medford girls soccer coach Buzz Thielemann likes the preseason contests. They give him a chance to mix and match new players with familiar ones on the field before conference play starts. On Tuesday, it was a familiar face that led South. Senior midfielder Erin Reno scored two second-half goals to help the Panthers (1-0-1) pull even with Mountain View for a 2-2 tie at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. "I felt really good about that," said Thielemann of his team's performance. "Last year we lost to these people (2-1), and it just gives me an idea of where we're at." Reno notched her final goal with five minutes to play for the final margin. "We're getting better," said Thielemann. "There are still some spots to work out, but that's why I like these preseason games." Lindsay Johnson gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but Reno evened the score 15 minutes in off an assist from Whitney Grant. Following Mychael Patrick's go-ahead score for Mountain View just moments later, Reno found the net for her final goal off a pass from Colleen Salisbury. "I was happy with the performance," said Thielemann. "Every year you get a new category of players and you have to see what works. But I'm pleased with how they played." The Panthers outshot Mountain View, 12-10, in the defensive battle. "They had very fast people," said Thielemann, whose Panthers outshot Mount Hood 31-10 in a season-opening win. "That (shots on goal) gives you an idea it was definitely defensive." Junior midfielder Heidi Meador also chipped in with a solid performance to help the Panthers' cause. CRATER 6, PHOENIX 2 - At Talent, Sarah LaFontaine scored four goals and added an assist to lead Crater to the non-league victory. LaFontaine, a sophomore, had a hat trick by the 24th minute of the game and added her final goal in the 71st minute. Jessi Foster and Jessica LaFontaine, Sarah's older sister, added goals for the Comets, who evened their record at 1-1. Helen Shorland scored Phoenix's first goal on a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Kim Tiger tallied the Pirates' other goal in the 78th minute on a corner kick. The loss dropped Phoenix to 0-1-1. ROSEBURG 5, NORTH BEND 0 - At Coos Bay, Morgan Downie and Carly Godard each had two goals and one assist for Roseburg. The Indians led 2-0 at halftime. Erika Hall accounted for Roseburg's other score. The Indians outshot North Bend, 30-9. Roseburg (2-1) used three different goalkeepers in the shutout. Boys SOUTH MEDFORD 2, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2 - At Bend, Ryan Wallenberg and Jon McCollum each scored a goal as the Panthers (1-0-1) held on for a tie. Mountain View grabbed an early lead in the sixth-minute of play on a direct kick just outside the box by Cole McCool. Wallenberg answered back seven minutes later off an assist by Pat Lower and the game headed into the break deadlocked at 1-1. The Panthers moved ahead off McCollum's score in the 46th minute, but the Cougars answered with the final goal by Cam Sulkosky. Goalkeeper Blake St. Onge played a major role for the Panthers, turning away Mountain View several times at the net. CRATER 2, GRANTS PASS - At Grants Pass, Todd Sesock and Jason Bell provided the only offense during a non-conference win for Crater (1-1) at Mel Ingram Field. Sesock broke up a scoreless halftime game with a header off a cross from Jason Licato in the 53rd minute. Just seven minutes later, Bell found net on a long corner kick from Licato to seal the win.
