With extreme heat forecast for the next week, Rogue Retreat rushed Thursday to open a cooling shelter for homeless people in Medford. “We don’t want people dehydrating and needing water,” said Brandi Barnes, case manager for Rogue Retreat. “It’s open to everyone as long as they aren’t belligerent.” Shortly after the opening at First Presbyterian Church, 85 S. Holly St., only a few people came in as temperatures hit the low 90s, but more were expected as the heat wave worsened. Barnes said the id

On the Fourth of July, during the big fireworks display at the Expo, we saw several fire trucks go roaring toward the Expo on Peninger Road. We were watching the fireworks near the Sonic Drive-in, and we could see what appeared to be a fair-sized fire burning in the vicinity of the Expo, and we had ashes falling from the sky all around us. What happened and is there any cause listed? — Dave, Medford Thanks for asking, Dave. You’re not the only one who’s been wondering. While most people were cap

There’s a bit of schizophrenia on Medford’s home-building front. On one hand, contractors and subcontractors are going to town, dawn to dusk, trying to fill the demand for housing. Yet a review of single-family residential building permits issued for the fiscal year 2017-18 that ended June 30 indicates a significant decline over recent years. The city issued 281 permits for construction valued at just under $67.9 million in 2017-18. That was on the heels of 341 permits and construction value of

An expedited land-use application to build 49 houses on a hillside in the south end of Talent has been denied by the city. Lack of a second access to the project over railroad tracks — an issue that led to rejection of a similar request a decade ago — was among the reasons cited for the denial. Tony and Tory Nieto had proposed creation of the Talent View Estates on 26.6 acres at 201 Belmont Road. State land-use law allows an expedited application that bypasses much of the usual land-use approval

Hulu: "Holistic Detective Agency' is a wild ride. The late Douglas Adams (“Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”), author of the books from which this gem was skillfully adapted by BBC, creates an elaborate world of the impossible where holistic detective Dirk Gently investigates cases involving the supernatural. The first five episodes or so can seem disjointed and arbitrary, but once you make it through the never-dull momentum, the connections are clear and it all starts with a mantra: “That’s not
