Ashland is recognized throughout the West for its Shakespeare plays. The Rogue River is noted for its rafting and fishing. But Southern Oregon is even more widely known among birders. Your typical birder may enjoy a day in the field, often with a camera checking out what new migrant or rarity has shown up near Howard Prairie Reservoir or at Lost Creek lake. News of a rare bird will spread through the birding community, and many will head out after work to check it out. However, there is another

A third Growler King location opens this weekend at the corner of Elk Street and Highway 99, a mile and half northwest of Rogue Valley Mall. The new establishment differs from neighborhood-based Growler King at Quality Market in east Medford and the Fair City Market in Central Point because it is a stand-alone operation. "The tasting room at Quality Market is going well," said Jake Miller, who oversees Growler King Operations. "So we're taking that gamble. We wanted to create a spot where people

Mercy Flights paramedic Trevor Waggoner recalls a diabetic patient who was constantly in and out of the emergency room. "He was really struggling with knowing how to manage his diabetes and was having to call 911 probably at least three times a week, sometimes more often," Waggoner says. "Sometimes it was multiple times in a day that his blood sugar was getting very low — dangerously low." The patient would lose consciousness, or if he was still alert, would become so combative with param

A tearful Dylan James Stradford, 29, pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to 12 burglary and theft charges stemming from his four-month burglary binge that capped a lengthy criminal past that neighbors said has forced them to padlock sheds, lo

The first time, the persisting memory was the haunting, trumpeting sound of sandhill cranes. We had just cross-country skied to Buck Lake and were cruising along its dikes when the calls began. Some describe the sound of sandhill cranes as a loud bugle call, with a throaty, guttural rolled “r.” The synchronized outbursts exploded and rattled the otherwise surreal stillness. It was wild and wonderful. The pair, possibly a breeding pair, took flight, rising from the nearby shallow ma

Quality Market has reopened on East Jackson Street after a nearly two-year hiatus. The new owners have renovated the store and revamped its offerings, and the most noticeable change may be a 21-tap growler station, featuring beers from regional microbreweries. Owner Herb Miller, who operates a chain of convenience stores in Jackson County, said the growler station is the first one here — aside from bars. "It's very widespread in other parts of the country, but it's been slow to spread to O

Part of a chip-seal project intended for three southwest Oregon highways has been canceled due to nearby wildfires. A 6.5-mile section of Highway 62 was scheduled for resurfacing this month between Trail and Casey State Park. Oregon Department of Transportation officials said they pulled the plug because of the Miles, Columbus, Snow Shoe and Round Top fires. “We’ve got fire crews using the highway to access Elk Creek Road, and you’ve got areas up there under evacuation notice,” said ODOT spokesm

A veteran was sentenced this week to eight years and three months in prison for sodomizing an incapacitated woman — despite his defense attorney’s pleas for leniency on the grounds that the veteran’s horrific combat experiences damaged his moral reasoning. Sean Geoffrey Myers, 49, of Talent will get credit toward his sentence for the almost three years he’s spent in the Jackson County Jail awaiting the outcome of his case. The 10,000-plus-acre Miles fire burning north of Trail made another run toward Elk Creek Road and jumped it Thursday, consuming a residence and prompting the closure of all recreational areas at Elk Creek and Lost Creek Lake. Mike Hammond said the fire burned his mother’s home that was built in the 1940s and had remained a family vacation spot. “Everything I owned burnt up,” he said. Hammond said “choppers and air cranes” were coming every five to six minutes to battle the flames. He said he has

One of the things that Hirson-Schwartz’s “Pippin: The Musical” has had going for it is the pure spectacle of the show. Originally directed and choreographed by none other than Bob Fosse, the anemic storyline and twisting plot is, as a rule, immersed in elaborate costumes, provocative dance numbers and a high-budget set, stage and sound design. Pippin — historically, the character is ever-so-loosely based on Pepin the Hunchback, son of Charlemagne — is a lisping and listless boy with a penchant f

An impromptu jam session in late 1956 — featuring singers and songwriters Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash — created a bit of rock 'n' roll heaven on Earth. The jam session was a serendipitous moment in American music history. Perkins, enjoying success on the heels of his hit “Blue Suede Shoes,” came into the studio at Sun Records in Nashville, Tennessee, to record new material on that day in December. His producer, Sam Phillips, brought in

In a time when online dating services are all the rage, “She Loves Me” is an old-fashioned charmer where love is advanced by paper and pen, with an envelope and stamp, as well as a holiday-inspired performance in which the players find love, satisfaction, success and their just deserts. Hungarian playwright Milos Lazlow wrote the script in 1937 as “Illatszertár,” also known as “Parfumerie,” and it has been produced since then on the stage, in film and a
