Jacksonville City Council unanimously approved moving forward with a land-use application by Waggin’ Tails Inc. for a dog park on city land next to the skate park. But Tuesday’s approval comes with one caveat — it must go back to the Parks and Visitor’s Services Committee for one more look. The parks committee had reviewed the site earlier in the year but did not have a quorum when it met prior to the council session and tabled the matter. “At this point it’s not quite set in stone, but we can t

What year did Oregon start issuing drivers’ licenses? Was this the first form of identification carried by local citizens? What year did Social Security cards start being issued? Before this did people carry their birth certificates around with them or was there not a need for self identification? — Al, Selma The first automobile arrived in Oregon in 1899, and the Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services agency began a process for registering vehicles in 1905, according to DMV. Sometimes, the great Flying Spaghetti Monster in the sky sends you signals when you least expect them. Consider the other night ... as I was driving home, caffeine-withdrawn, from work. Six traffic lights — each of which turned to yellow as I approached. An Amber Alert, as it were, without the accompanying anxiety of a lost child. Well, at least in the literal sense. We live in such a yes or no, thumbs-up or -down, red or blue world, that a warning reminding us to pause is a jolt to the decision

CENTRAL POINT — Ten seconds into speaking with Crater senior Tony Flores and there’s no doubt he carries a matter-of-fact personae. Ten seconds into watching film of Flores in action for the Comets and there’s also no doubt that he’s a throwback to another generation, where physicality reigned supreme. “He’s definitely worth the price of admission,” says Crater football coach Randy Waite. “He’s fun to watch play football.” “He’s old-school football right there,” adds Waite of his senior running

Bringing a new technology to the Rogue Valley Mall, Ron and Carolyn Triplett say the people who trickle in to their newly opened iPrint 3D Studio each day are equal parts serious enthusiasts and curious newbies. Opened this summer, specializing in selling 3D printers, parts and 3D-printed objects, IPrint 3D Studio was born out of curiosity and a desire to educate. The couple, who both have “day jobs,” say they became interested in the printing technology when their son delved into 3D printing an

Plans are shaping up to extend the Bear Creek Greenway approximately 1.3 miles farther southeast to North Mountain Park in Ashland. The Greenway, which was launched in the 1970s, stretches 17.9 miles from Ashland to an area north of Central Point, generally following Bear Creek’s path. A feasibility study conducted by Alta Planning and Design showed that continuing the path close to Bear Creek would meet the project goals that include finding the most direct route while providing a safe route an

Several weeks back I wrote of a visit to the northerly burg of Glendale. While visiting with their mayor, he’d told me about a 45-mile scenic byway that runs beside Cow Creek and the historic rail line (still in service) from there to Riddle. The number one item on this Monday’s to-do list read explore, so off Lane and I went to seek fresh territory. We admit we’re sometimes lacking in the sense-of-direction department. We cruised Glendale until residents began eying us suspiciously, but we coul

We could see a little relief from the choking wildfire smoke over the weekend — but our neighbors farther north won’t be so lucky. The plume of wildfire smoke that canceled Friday football games and threatened outdoor Shakespeare performances is expected to move north over the weekend, according to National Weather Service senior forecaster Jay Stockton; however, the Medford and Ashland area is “still going to be hazy.” “You should see improvement in the morning,” Stockton said of the smoke. “Ho

While watching the ill-fated Oregon Ducks play against Ohio State, I noticed that the Ohio players had stickers on their helmets that looked like marijuana leaves (or perhaps atomic symbols?). Now, my husband gets irritated when I ask "stupid questions," but I think he just didn't know the answer. Do you know what they mean? — G.E., Ashland Based on the outcome of that game, if those Ohio State players were operating under the influence of any drugs, we seriously doubt it was marijuana. T

She was 55 years old and in good health. She planned to devote the second half of her life to her two passions — outdoor sports and music. “I was always very athletic, bicycling at least 2,000 miles a year for nearly 20 years, skiing regularly at Mount Ashland, and hiking in the local mountains,” Basin wrote in a letter to t

Jackson County has seen another spike in drug overdoses — but this time people are surviving because they are being given an overdose antidote in time. Jackson County Public Health issued an alert this week warning about the spate of overdoses. A particularly potent batch of heroin may be in the area, or heroin could be laced with fentanyl — a potentially deadly narcotic used as pain medication and for anesthesia, officials said. Dealers have begun adding fentanyl to everything from heroin to co

Marvel Television’s Daredevil has been the initial hit and forerunner of the multiple Netflix superhero series produced by ABC Studios. The follow-ups have garnered enough viewership to have multiple seasons that include “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist” and the two spin-off shows, “The Punisher” and “The Defenders.” So, what made “Daredevil” so special to be the platform of these other well-made web-series? It comes from two already proven formulas: 1) the down and gritty reality of Chr

Medford City Council candidate Curt Ankerberg could be stripped of his CPA license, depending on the outcome of an investigation by the Oregon Board of Accountancy. The investigation began earlier this year after a U.S. Tax Court judge found Ankerberg had fraudulently filed tax returns three years in a row. “We have an open investigation, and the matter hasn’t been concluded at this point,” said Kimberly Fast, director of the Board of Accountancy. She wouldn’t disclose the reason for the investi
