Volunteers with a Greensprings wild animal rescue center say dwindling community support could make this summer’s batch of babies its last. Southern Oregon Animal Rehabilitation founder Tiffany Morey says she’s not sure how long she can manage the $6,000 in monthly expenses the center accrues May through September, when it cares for orphaned fawns and other animals until their release into the wild. “Most of our wildlife patients come in at the end of May and beginning of June. Our goal is for a

Medford mom Maggie Carrillo said it was the simple gesture of wanting to share the outgrown clothing of her three children via social media that launched a project she hopes will become a regional effort of families helping families. Unofficially, the Rogue Valley Clothing Exchange began this summer with a simple “swap meet” style get-together. Carrillo said she initially planned for an outdoor space where mothers and children could spread out blankets and display their gently used clothing avai

Here’s the story / of a ... OK, if you started humming, bobbing your head, picturing yourself as a tic-tac-toe square, or singing aloud (hopefully not at work) the theme song to a certain iconic television series, the good news is that you’re probably not alone in doing so. The bad news is … what is wrong with us? Seriously. “The Brady Bunch” went off the air in 1974 and yet we still know that the girls all had hair of gold, like their mother, and the boys and their dad, despite being four men l

Buried under a blanket of more than 9 feet of snow, Crater Lake is a Mecca for snowshoers and cross-country skiers. In summer, it’s a hiker’s paradise, with 24 trails that wind through the park’s diverse landscape, including the rim of the blue, deep-water lake. Pristine, old-growth forests, glacier-carved cliffs, wildflower-embroidered meadows and towering, jagged peaks create jaw-dropping vistas at every turn. Oregon’s only national park, Crater Lake had more than 615,0

CENTRAL POINT — A local farm stand that's been offering peaches, watermelon and corn for over 128 years opened for business one final time Tuesday morning. The Beebe Farms stand closed for good that afternoon after longtime customers trickled in for their final stash of winter squash, apples and pumpkins. Elena Gealon, who grew up playing — and later working — at the farm, has owned the land with her family for two decades. Gealon said the trio of families who have kept the

With its unique blend of community, British pub fare and just enough concessions for us Yanks, The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant hasn't lost its place as "Ashland's living room" under new ownership. As overjoyed as most of Ashland was to see the headlines that The Black Sheep would remain open thanks to Clarinda and Jon Merripen, who took ownership in July, the skeptic in me was worried it wouldn't be the same. After lunch Sunday with an old friend, I'm pleased to say that concern was misplaced.

Hoping to escape the heavy smoke enveloping the Rogue Valley, I headed to Grants Pass with a friend to try Thai cuisine at the Royal Barge. As we drove into the city, the smoke was still substantial and many people were wearing face masks. Meals out will come with a side of smoke for a while. Being a relative newbie to Thai food, the extensive Royal Barge menu has many items that sound delicious and exotic at the same time. We peppered our friendly waiter with questions. We learned that Pad Thai

ASHLAND — Tucked into a corner of Lithia Park stands a silverleaf magnolia tree with leaves so big that one would leave Eve dressed modestly. "Look at the size of these leaves," says Tom Foster, Lithia's resident tour guide. "They look like big, old paper towels." Dozens of these leaves now rim the park's lower duck pond, but some still wave like flags in the morning breeze from one of these deciduous trees that make Lithia's 103 acres shine in late fall. Molly Morrison pulls off her hiking boots Tuesday and reaches into her Trader Joe's bag for a pair of flowery rubber boots that any botanist worth her weight in Draba verna would have for a foray into a giant puddle atop Upper Table Rock. Morrison grabs a little mesh net and steps gingerly into a large, ephemeral vernal pool. She's after a 22-legged, backstroke-swimming fairy shrimp, quite literally a little bugger that looks like something out of a SpongeBob SquarePants episode. Morrison dips d
