Every garden needs a cherry-tomato plant. The sweet, ripe fruit are perfect for summer salads, an important ingredient in some hors d'oeuvres and a great, quick snack off the vine. The fruit come in a variety of shapes and colors, from yellow and orange to red and purple, and each gardener seems to have that one cherry tomato to rave about. Last year, the cherry tomato took a big step forward with the introduction of Tomaccio, a cherry tomato bred specifically for drying. The result of a 12-year

SHADY COVE — From Jason Denton’s position atop the Rogue River boat ramp at Shady Cove, the Jackson County sheriff’s marine deputy could tell one of the paddlers in an open raft clearly wasn’t sober. Denton approached the man, who turned out to be a South Dakotan who wasn’t shy about admitting he was impaired and happy to declare that he hadn’t been drinking. “This kid was laughing, ‘I’m not drunk. I’m stoned on good Oregon weed and it’s legal,’” Denton says. When the tourist received his ticket

Murder still haunts Ashland

One of the most tragic unsolved murder mysteries in Jackson County is the horrific death five years ago of David Michael Grubbs. An autopsy determined he was nearly decapitated from a weapon with a medium to large blade, police said. A bucket-list scramble along the coast

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-07-28

Southern Oregon's Wild Rivers Coast is a gem. Crowds are rare, and pristine reaches of beach, like those along the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor, are within a short walk of the highway. But the beach isn't the most magical part of the Wild Rivers Coast — it's the wild rivers. And the Elk River is one of them. The Elk falls out of the Copper Salmon and Grassy Knob wilderness areas and winds its way 25 miles before spilling into the Pacific near Port Orford. The Elk's waters are cool

Being reminded by my Pacific Power statement today brought my question to mind. I have lived in this house four years and only changed a light bulb once. Now I'm replacing the old bulbs with new energy-saving bulbs. My question is, what do I do with the 14 light bulbs I have in my utility room? They are all unused and could be used by someone else. — L.M., Medford Since you were reminded by your power bill, we took your question to a man who can literally light up a room: Monte Mendenhall,

Green Beans with Balsamic Pesto When summer green beans are tender and full of sweetness, this pesto sets them off as little else can. 1-1/2 pounds young and slender green beans, trimmed About 1/3 cup homemade or store

Dispatch back on the road; playing Britt Festival

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-22

Sightings of the band Dispatch have been about as frequent as full eclipses of the sun for about a decade. After forming in 1996, the three members of Dispatch — multi-instrumentalists Chad Stokes, Brad Corrigan and Peter Francis — made Dispatch a regular on the national music scene, self-releasing four albums and touring. Then, in 2002, Dispatch disbanded. What happened next is an interesting story in rock music. Feeling they hadn’t given fans a proper goodbye, Dispatch scheduled a farewell sho
