Livestock producers are feeling the effects of drought at an intensifying rate. On the heels of two sparse rain years, pastures are drying up and herds might follow suit if the trend continues into next year. Fourth-generation Eagle Point rancher Ron Anderson figures plenty of his fellow ranchers are in a world of hurt. “We had no snowpack to speak of in comparison to what we used to,” Anderson said. “So when the snow’s gone, you know the runoff slows down. If you’re in the right place, you stil

To see the new production of “The Winter’s Tale” at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is to witness two exotic worlds. There is the gray, austere court of paranoid King Leontes, draped in formality and lashed by cold winds. Then there’s the pastoral, somewhat raggedy land of Bohemia, where spring is in the air and the eternal feminine holds the promise of renewal. Director Desdemona Chiang treats the drama as two distinct plays juxtaposed into one extended narrative. Ch

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has received 40,800 public comments on a controversial natural gas pipeline and export facility proposed in Southern Oregon — with most of the comments opposing the project. Although the comment period closed Monday, more letters could arrive that were postmarked by the due date, said DEQ spokesperson Katherine Benenati. The vast majority of comments came in by email, although others came via traditional mail, she said. Benenati said the volume of c

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission turned down a request Friday for a rehearing of its denial of a natural gas pipeline through Oregon. The 232-mile, 3-foot diameter Pacific Connector pipeline would have crossed through southwestern Oregon carrying natural gas to a processing plant north of Coos Bay for export overseas. It would have gone through 157 miles of privately owned land, impacting 630 landowners. In a March denial, FERC found little evidence to support a need for the pipeline and

Over the past two weeks, many paved thoroughfares in Jackson County have been temporarily turned into gravel roads, annoying residents and vehicle service departments alike. “We get a lot of chipped front bumpers,” said Joshua Saltmarsh at the Lithia Honda service department. “What we see a lot of is as the gravel gets kicked up, it gets into the brake rotors and causes abnormal squealing.” Cracked windshields and dinged fog lights have also become more commonplace, he said. “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” — L.P. Hartley They do things differently in Portland, but not because it is a foreign country, although many Americans might wish it were: At this moment, it is one national embarrassment too many. Rather, the tumults in Portland, which is a petri dish of progressivism, perhaps reveal something about Oregon’s political DNA. A century ago, the state was a bastion of reaction. Recently in Portland, an “intersectional” feminist boo

ROSEBURG — The two-airplane crash in Idaho that injured two Roseburg men and killed a 2-year-old boy occurred without warning, one of the pilots said Monday. "I didn't see the other plane or hear them on the radio, and they didn't see us," said Chris Jordan, 39, of Roseburg. "I knew from reading, people don't survive midair collisions. I thought I was going to die." Jordan was landing a single-engine Piper Tri-Pacer on Friday at the Johnson Creek Airport, a back-country airstrip near Yello

While we have heard quite a lot about how the forest fire smoke in the Rogue Valley is likely to affect people, I have also found it interesting to note how it is affecting my garden. During the days of intense sun and heat that preceded the fires, many of my plants were unhappy. Tomatoes stopped putting out new blooms, but continued to put on leafy growth. I sadly watched my gladiolus and daylilies have a short bloom period as they suffered in the heat. I protected my cucumbers with a sheet of

When the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its much maligned Citizens United ruling, declaring that financial expenditures on behalf of political candidates are a form of free speech protected by the First Amendment, it specifically upheld requirements that individual donors to political groups be identified and disclosed to the public. After the ruling, interest groups employed a variety of tactics to evade disclosiong donors’ identities. Millions of dollars of so-called “dark money” has been spen

I recently turned 60, and I heard seniors can get a free fishing license in Oregon. Is that true? It’s a given that Hollywood, when not busy producing sequels and offshoots of successful films, is known for dusting off old hits, then shining them up in the form of a remake. Let’s just take last year as an example. In 2017, we got “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Mummy,” “It,” “Flatliners,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” and “Jumanji.” Among the pile of remakes scheduled for this year, which include
