Movie review: ‘Bombshell’ sheds light on actress, inventor Hedy Lamarr

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-09

It’s likely that even the most ardent movie fan is not familiar with the name Hedwig Kiesler. It’s even probable that a good share of regular moviegoers don’t know the name Hedy Lamarr. But they’re one and the same. Kiesler, a young, up-and-coming starlet in her native Vienna, had her name changed by studio executives — or maybe it was a publicist — after she was discovered by Louis B. Mayer in the 1930s, signed to a $500 a week contract, and shipped off

John Krasinski had been playing the wait and see game that so many actors go through for a few years before he became everyone’s favorite but snarky boy next door Jim Halpert on “The Office.” And during the show’s nine-year run, whenever there was some downtime, he managed to get roles in all sorts of feature films, from “Jarhead” to “Dreamgirls” to “The Muppets.” Krasinski cut his directing teeth on a few episodes of “

The worst city or the worst story?

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-28

What with bronze medals, a spot on the podium and a shot at your name on a plaque, third place isn’t all bad. But when Medford landed third in a report by 24/7 Wall St., published in USA Today, of “the 25 worst cities in the U.S. to raise children,” locals were less than excited. The listicle’s authors said they ranked metro areas based on four metrics: violent crime rate, children’s access to exercise, graduation rates and preschool enrollment rates. “Some parts of the country struggle to provi

John Nilsen and Swimfish: A ‘pretty cool’ band

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-23

Portland musician, composer and recording artist John Nilsen is an artist who follows his muse. “I’ve put the art first,” he says during a telephone interview. “Not what the industry suggested I put first. There’s a big difference. Most artists will put out what they think will sell, what they think will get them gigs, or what a record label pressures them into. The problem with the music industry is that it’s run by people who don’t know the first thing about music.” So Nilsen goes his own way.

Saints of the Caribbean:

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-23

It seems a bit extravagant to consult God on vacation details, but for the Caribbean islands, don't hesitate to call on a saint or two. Nine islands share the Saint distinction, including three U.S. Virgin islands; one isle divided by two nations; some Windward and Netherlands Antilles landfalls; the St. Tropez of the Caribbean; and a country that changed its name from Christopher to Kitts. The island name game was first played by Columbus, who wasn't so much creative as he was religious. "Chris

Ashland’s fire was a nightmare

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-23

With humidity barely 10 percent, possible lightning storms in the forecast, and for the fourth straight day temperatures searing the valley at more than 100 degrees, what else could it be but fire weather? Yet, on this Saturday, Aug. 8, 1959, it wasn’t lightning that sparked the inferno; but rather two malicious men — or perhaps just two stupid boys playing with matches — who did the deed. No arsonist would ever go to trial. But two fires were deliberately set, one near the Jackson Hot Springs,

Yup, that’s hemp growing on Main Street

When I drive between Jacksonville and Oak Grove School in Medford, I see two large plantings of something on the south side of Main Street. Can anyone at the Mail Tribune tell me what’s growing like weeds out there? — Mike R., Medford One thing for sure, those aren’t big tomato plants popping out of the ground. We started with a call to Oregon State University Extension Service, and our hunch was reinforced. “I don’t usually go out West Main, but when I slowed down, it sure looked like hemp to m

With an Aug. 28 deadline looming, only five people have turned in all the paperwork needed to qualify for a run at a Medford City Council seat this November. To gather enough registered voter signatures and to get them verified by the Jackson County clerk, candidates will need to get most of the paperwork done well before the deadline, City Recorder Karen Spoonts said. “I think the 24th is pushing it,” she said. “All the signatures need to be counted and returned to the city recorder’s office.”

Mail Tribune (Medford, OR — Wayback) · snapshot 2018-08-15

Theft of a much-used hot dog cart from a local homeless outreach project has put a damper on efforts to provide meals to the community’s most needy. Mayne said her volunteer group was heavily reliant on the hot dog cart due to its capacity to cook and heat severa
