SARS-CoV2 infection in the intestine

Principal Investigator: BRIAN KELSALL Organization: NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES Fiscal Year: 2020 Award: $10,000 Funding agency: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Demonstrating that SARS-CoV-2 infects and replicates in intestinal epithelium in vivo has been inconclusive. Therefore we have begun to stain intestinal tissues from infected macaques for viral antigen and cell markers to determine if infection occurs and what cells are infected. Furthermore, It has been previously reported that ADAM17 can cleave ACE2, the entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2, generating a soluble form of ACE2 that limits SARS-CoV-2 infectivity. Thus we are exploring the ability of ADAM17 in the intestine to generate soluble ACE2, limiting viral infection of intestinal epithelial cells.
