Principal Investigator: William Elkins Organization: NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES Fiscal Year: 2020 Award: $57,413 Funding agency: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases MGGM initiated several collaborative projects for creating genetically engineered animal models for understanding the mechanisms of novel SARS-CoV2 virus transmission and therapeutic targets. Novel corona virus SARS-CoV2 is responsible for the COVID-19. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor for SARS-CoV2 present on the cell surface of most cells, is responsible for entry of virus into the cell. On the other hand, a serine protease TMPRSS2, is involved in priming the spike (S) protein of the virus. In collaboration with LCIM, mouse models are being created to understand the mechanisms of viral entry, transmission and therapeutics. MGGM also played a critical role in cryopreserving the existing and on-going breeding colonies during the COVID-19 crisis. Approx. 130 lines of mice were cryopreserved for over 15 different labs.
