ABSTRACT, Biostatistics and Data Management Core (BDMC)
The Biostatistics and Data Management Core (BDMC) plays a critical role in the success of cancer research at
the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) by providing state-of-the-art biostatistical
and data science support and data management services. This includes the design, conduct, analysis, and
interpretation of clinical trials, basic science experimental studies, population-based research, and studies using
real-world data. For clinical trials initiated by IUSCCC members, the BDMC provides biostatistics and data
management support for trials conducted by the IUSCCC Clinical Trials Office and biostatistics support for trials
conducted by the Hoosier Cancer Research Network and Big Ten Cancer Research Network. The BDMC is
comprised of faculty and staff biostatisticians, data scientists, and data managers. This Shared Resource
collaborates with members of all IUSCCC Research Programs. The primary mission of BDMC is to facilitate
cancer research for IUSCCC members, especially by assisting them with obtaining peer-reviewed federal grants
and journal publications. The BDMC also contributes substantially to education and training (e.g., mentoring
residents, fellows, and junior investigators) and scientific review (e.g., IUSCCC Scientific Review Committee).
Since the last competitive renewal, the BDMC has fulfilled its stated plans to prepare for IUSCCC growth by
increasing the number and expertise of faculty and staff; increasing cross-core collaborations with the Cancer
Bioinformatics Core (CBC) when developing grant proposals that involve both bioinformatics and biostatistics;
implementing novel statistical designs for genomic-guided clinical trials; and augmenting statistical expertise for
analyzing high-throughput “omics” data. Specific initiatives achieved in the current grant period to meet the
increasing and specialized research activities at IUSCCC include substantially increasing the BDMC faculty
effort; creating a new area called Real World Data; creating a co-Director role to complement the expertise of
the Director; creating new Associate Director roles, which grow leadership and optimize triaging of requests
according to expertise; expanding expertise in data science, machine learning, basic science, and clinical trials;
and creating and filling a new cross-core Program Manager position to strengthen coordination with the CBC
while facilitating communication with IUSCCC members and internal and external partners. When necessary,
high-impact statistical methodologies are developed to address scientific problems arising from cancer studies.
Plans for the next five-year cycle include growing our expertise in all four areas of cancer research (basic science,
clinical trials, population science, and real-world data); broadening our data science expertise in all position
levels; increasing the frequency with which we apply novel methods to published cancer collaborations; and
extending our successful coordination with the CBC to include integration of cancer-related data science silos
throughout our campus.
