Highly effective neutralizing antibodies could have utility in the prevention or treatment of infection from HIV-1, influenza virus, Lassa virus, and other human pathogens, including the recently emerged SARS-CoV-2. Much of our work with neutralizing antibodies has focused on identifying, characterizing and in many cases improving naturally elicited antibodies. Improved HIV-1 neutralizing antibodies include versions of CD4-binding site-directed antibodies capable of neutralizing over 95% of HIV strains, and some of these have been manufactured and assessed clinically. We are also working in collaboration with other groups to identify and to characterize effective neutralizing antibodies against other human pathogens. Overall, our antibody-related work involves understanding antibodies for vaccine insights and improving antibodies, as possible therapeutic agents against HIV-1, SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, and other human pathogens.
