Summary of Bicycle System Projects To enhance bicy cle safety and to encourage bicy cling as a viable travel m ode and an alternative to the single occupant autom obile, the City of Medford should im plem ent the projects identified below. Priorities for bicy cle sy stem improvem ents as identifie d in the goals and policies for this m ode are to serve m ajor destinations (such as schools, parks, shopping and em ployment areas) while filling in gaps to create an interconnected sy stem . Figure 10-2 illustrates a complete bicycle circulation network including existing facilities, facilities that would be added as a part of roadway improvem ent projects, and facilities that will fill gaps and serve activity centers as discussed in this chapter. • Construct new bicy cle lanes as part of roadway improvem ents. • Retrofit bicycle lanes onto existing streets by parking rem oval, street widening, narrowing travel lanes, or providing additional space through other m eans. • Com plete Bear Creek Greenway , the Larson Cr eek Greenway , limited segm ents of a greenway along Lone Pine Creek (particularly near th e Kennedy School) and identify other opportunities for m ulti-use paths. • Overcom e barriers to bicy cle circulation th rough the use “bicy cle boulevards”, accessway s, multi-use paths or easem ents, or other creative strategies. • Implem ent safety improvem ents such as evaluating and addressing where possible the contributing causes to existing bicy cle accidents to identify appropriate street or intersection improvem ents (this could include sight distance, lack of clear right-of-way , or other factors). • Implem ent operational improvem ents such as installing bicy cle loop detectors at signalized intersections where bicy cle lanes are present • Create a City Bicy cle Advisory Com mittee to prioritize bikeway improvem ents, advocate and advise on bicy cle issues and needs, and encourage bicy cle education • Improve the general bicy cling environm ent: o Support facilities like parking and safe storage, “share the road” signage or others o Routine m aintenance o Encourage RVTD’ s “Bikes on Buses” and sim ilar program s o Support efforts to encourage safe bicy cle use through staff training, data collection about bicycle use, public education and outreach, and other activities.
