Epstein Files and the Missing Fort Knox Gold: What the Documents Actually Show

A viral claim that Jeffrey Epstein's files prove America's gold reserves are missing or Fort Knox is empty does not survive contact with the actual documents. A search of all 1,378,636 DOJ Epstein documents indexed by Profoundd finds the claim traces back to a known fabricator — but the files do contain real, unresolved gold transactions worth examining on their own terms.

The claim spread fast: emails in the Epstein files prove Fort Knox is empty, America's gold is gone, and the IMF's former chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested in 2011 to silence him. It is not in the documents. Profoundd searched every one of the 1,378,636 DOJ Epstein files in its index using more than a dozen search terms — "Fort Knox," "gold reserves," "gold swap," "gold lease," "rehypothecation," "Exchange Stabilization Fund," and the names of major vault operators and refiners among them. Zero documents contain the phrase "Fort Knox is empty." Zero contain "missing gold," "audit the gold," or "gold swap." The 24 documents that do mention "Fort Knox" are mostly emails from Epstein's pilot Larry Visoski about his daughter's Army ROTC graduation at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 2014 and 2015. A tax-refund company, a Goldfinger joke, and a furniture catalogue account for most of the rest.

The actual source of the claim is two inbound emails, sent five weeks apart in 2011. The first, document EFTA01776902, is a bare link sent by a correspondent listed as "Selana P" on May 31, 2011, with a subject line that calls it "a theory" in her own words. The second, document EFTA00719240, arrives June 18, 2011, from a sender whose name is redacted in the production — it pastes the full text of an article titled "Russia Says IMF Chief Jailed For Discovering All US Gold is Gone." Eight minutes later, the same text arrives again as a scraped blog repost, still carrying the site's leftover SEO footer — the unmistakable fingerprint of bulk copy-paste. One copy addresses Epstein's email to himself twice in the same To: line. The article's author is "Sorcha Faal," a pen name associated with David Booth, a retired chemical-plant operator who has spent years manufacturing fake intelligence dispatches purportedly prepared for Vladimir Putin by the FSB. The same operation reached Epstein at least once before: document EFTA00745759, June 2010, a different Sorcha Faal fabrication about the Gulf of Mexico seafloor, forwarded up a four-person chain ending with the note "Pls show this e to jeff." The hoax also fails on its own timeline. It claims Strauss-Kahn was alarmed because Washington was stalling a gold delivery to the IMF under the Second Amendment to the IMF's Articles of Agreement. That gold was the IMF's own — 403.3 tonnes the IMF Executive Board authorized itself to sell in September 2009. Those sales concluded in December 2010, five months before Strauss-Kahn's arrest, to buyers including the Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. There was no American delivery obligation to stall.

Our own first pass at this said there was no bullion business anywhere in these records. That was wrong, and here is the correction: the files do contain real gold records — just not ones about Fort Knox. Document EFTA02441175, dated August 18, 2009, shows Epstein's assistant Lesley Groff forwarding him a solicitation from Southridge, LLC offering to sell 500,000 metric tonnes of South Korean gold bullion at a 13 percent discount to the LBMA price. The arithmetic alone exposes it: 500,000 metric tonnes is more than twice all the gold ever mined in human history. The LBMA's name is misspelled. Real bullion does not sell at double-digit discounts. This is a textbook advance-fee bullion fraud. There is no evidence Epstein responded. More substantive are documents EFTA01100532 and EFTA01119746-48: genuine Swiss private-banking paperwork from Bank Frey & Co. AG in Zurich, account number 60.068190_6, valued at EUR 40,222,387 on December 18, 2012, held entirely in commodities. Nine days later, the entire position was liquidated over the counter — 8,000 one-ounce bars for USD 13.2 million, 269 one-kilo bars for USD 14.3 million, and 458 one-kilo bars for EUR 18.3 million. Roughly 976 kilos of physical gold, approximately one tonne, for around USD 51 million total. The relationship manager named on every page is Stefan Buck, who was indicted in the US in April 2013 on unrelated offshore tax allegations and acquitted by a New York jury in November 2017. The account holder's name is redacted on all four documents. We do not know whose account it was. We are not asserting it was Epstein's.

The broader, legitimate version of the Fort Knox question is this: the United States officially reports 8,133.5 tonnes of gold reserves, and there has been no modern, fully independent public audit of those holdings. That is a real and fair criticism — and it is a completely different argument from the one the Sorcha Faal fabrication makes. Meanwhile, the documented movement of foreign-held gold out of American vaults is the story that actually has sourcing behind it. De Nederlandsche Bank disclosed in September 2026 that it moved 86 tonnes out of the New York Federal Reserve and Ottawa to London between March and August 2026, citing "increasing geopolitical unrest," reducing its New York share from 31.3 to 18.5 percent of its 612-tonne reserve. France moved 129 tonnes out between July 2025 and January 2026. Germany repatriated 300 tonnes in 2017. Foreign gold leaving American custody is the real, sourced story. "Fort Knox is empty" is a fabrication that someone forwarded to Jeffrey Epstein in 2011. Nobody in the index answered it. One copy, EFTA00719242, carries the single word "delete" above the pasted article — the record does not establish who typed it, and we are not claiming it was Epstein.
