Status of AI adoption 2 AI investments are rising, with genAI adoption still largely in the experimentation stage. To understand the extent of industry transformation in the context of AI, its adoption across industries can be examined. There are various ways to assess AI adoption, including investment and spending statistics, adoption surveys, projected impacts and more. This paper specifically uses AI investments and existing surveys to understand where organizations are directing their AI efforts. Overall, investments in AI and its uses have soared. This growth is expected to continue globally, with AI-related spending across industries projected to reach approximately $630 billion by 2028, growing at a 29% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2024 to 2028,15 alongside an anticipated revenue of nearly $1 trillion.16,17 GenAI, in particular, has been a major contributor to this growth, with its capabilities evolving at an unprecedented pace.18 Global corporate spending on genAI has grown significantly, with projections indicating a rapid increase at a 59% CAGR from 2024 to 2028, reaching over $200 billion globally by 2028.19 According to one survey, 65% of organizations now report using genAI in at least one function.20 This rapid rise in both genAI investment and usage indicates that genAI is likely accelerating broader AI adoption, with the intention of embedding advanced AI capabilities more deeply into business operations.
