BIPs — saved copies
Document text
Research, not advice. Part of the Bitcoin research archive (October 2026). Claims labelled unverified, contested or fringe are reported, not endorsed; statuses of bills and rules are as of the date checked. Government, court and patent records are public domain; the research notes are CC BY 4.0.
BIPs — saved copies
Bitcoin Improvement Proposals that the technology note (notes/2026-10-09-technology.md) relies on, saved as full
copies from the official repository.
- Issuer: the BIPs repository, https://github.com/bitcoin/bips (each BIP's authors are listed below).
- Retrieved: 2026-10-09, from
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bitcoin/bips/master/<file>. The repository'smasterwas at commit927b6de9915c9262615a6399de51b200f81e5aa4(2026-10-02, "Address some wording nits in BIP 54 (#2313)") when the copies were taken. - Why full copies are allowed: every file saved here carries its own licence line, and each one is public
domain (PD) or a free licence (BSD-2-Clause, BSD-3-Clause, MIT, CC0-1.0). The licence column is copied from the
file's own
License:header. BIP 3 (saved here) is the current rule that BIPs must be freely licensed; older BIPs were accepted as public domain or under the Open Publication License (BIP 3, "BIP Licensing"). - Test vectors, not secrets (note added by the completeness check, 2026-10-09):
bip-0032.mediawiki,bip-0084.mediawikiandbip-0086.mediawikicontain the specifications' published test vectors. These are example extended private keys, and BIP 84 and BIP 86 use the standard test mnemonic "abandon … about". They are public examples printed in the specs so implementations can be checked. They are not anyone's keys, and no funds should ever be sent to them. If the repo's "no private keys or seed phrases" rule is to be read strictly, replace these three files with links. - "Date" is the BIP's
Assigned(number-assignment) date from its header, not the date it activated. - "Status" is as of the retrieval date. Under BIP 3 (§ "Progression through BIP Statuses"): Draft = being worked on; Complete = the authors have finished it and recommend adoption, but it is not shown to be in active use; Deployed = shown to be in active use (for a soft fork: its activation criteria were met on the network); Closed = of historical interest only (abandoned, rejected, replaced or failed).
- BIPs 1 and 2 (earlier process rules) were read to check licensing but not saved.
- sha256 is the first 12 hex digits of the saved file's SHA-256, so a later reader can tell if a copy changed.

Linked, not copied (no licence stated in the file)
These six are central to the note but their files carry no License: line or copyright section, so under the
repo's rules they are linked and summarised here rather than copied. (BIP 1 required early BIPs to be public domain
or Open Publication License, but these files do not say which.)
| BIP | Title | Author | URL | What it does (own words) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | Pay to Script Hash | Gavin Andresen | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0016.mediawiki | Lets a payment go to the hash of a script (addresses starting 3); the spender reveals the script and its inputs. Enforced for blocks timestamped on or after 1 April 2012. |
| 34 | Block v2, Height in Coinbase | Gavin Andresen | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0034.mediawiki | Requires each block's coinbase to start with the block height, making coinbase transactions unique. Enforced from block 227,931 (BIP 90). |
| 43 | Purpose Field for Deterministic Wallets | Marek Palatinus, Pavol Rusnak | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0043.mediawiki | Reserves the first level of an HD-wallet path for a "purpose" number (44, 49, 84, 86 ...). |
| 44 | Multi-Account Hierarchy for Deterministic Wallets | Marek Palatinus, Pavol Rusnak | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0044.mediawiki | Standard path m / purpose' / coin_type' / account' / change / address_index so different wallets derive the same addresses from one seed. |
| 68 | Relative lock-time using consensus-enforced sequence numbers | Mark Friedenbach et al. | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0068.mediawiki | Repurposes the input nSequence field so that a transaction cannot be mined until the coin it spends is a given number of blocks or a given time old (relative lock-time). Part of the 2016 CSV soft fork (with BIPs 112, 113). |
| 101 | Increase maximum block size | Gavin Andresen | https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0101.mediawiki | The 2015 Bitcoin XT hard-fork plan: 8,000,000-byte blocks from 2016-01-11, doubling every two years (with linear growth in between) up to 8,192,000,000 bytes in 2036. Closed; never activated. |
