Ashland Daily Tidings/DENISE BARATTA Ashland boys trip up Tribe By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings It was a total team effort. Thanks to a string of illnesses, the Ashland High boys soccer team used all its reserves to defeat Roseburg 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Ashland Middle School field. The Grizzlies improved their record to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the Southern Oregon Conference, while Roseburg slipped to 2-2 in the SOC. "I had over half my starters on the bench," head coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou said. "I was a little nervous before the game because you don't know how things are going to work out when you don't have your starters. But I think the guys did an excellent job." In the first half the Grizzlies controlled the ball allowing Roseburg only two shots on goal. Ashland's best scoring chance of the half came when junior striker Fletcher Beaudoin fired a shot from 10 yards out - only to have it bounce off the goal post. In the second half the Grizzlies stepped it up. At the 47-minute mark senior striker Jesse Hodges found his partner in crime, Scott Beaver, who was wide open and nailed a shot from eight yards into the back of the net to score the winning goal for Ashland. "That's our work," Tiaa Toutou said. "Work ball the around and get a lot of touches. And that's how we finished the shot today. That's how it is supposed to be done. It was picture perfect." Eight out of the 11 Ashland starters did not begin the game because they were either sick or injured. "I thought that the entire team did a great job today," senior striker Scott Beaver said. "The JV players that played for us today stepped up and accepted the challenge. It was nice to score today because I haven't scored in a little while." The Grizzlies will play at 4 p.m. next Tuesday in Klamath Falls when they take on loop-leading Klamath Union (4-0). Ashland Girls Soccer At Roseburg , the Grizzlies nabbed their first SOC victory with a 2-1 defeat of Roseburg Tuesday afternoon. Four minutes later sophomore defender Brittany Reinhardt nailed the game-winner for Ashland. The Indians (2-2) held a 15-6 shots-on-goal advantage. The Grizzlies are slated to play at 4 p.m. next Tuesday at the North Mountain Park against Klamath Union.
