--> --> Offended by Tidings story I'm a homeschooling parent of three. The recent article on the Ashland School District and its alternative education program for homeschoolers offended me. The article blatantly compared apples to oranges by lumping cuts in its public school system with surpluses and expansion in its alternative program. Perhaps a little clarification could help diffuse some of the resultant anger that has now occurred. Willow Wind's funding comes directly from Salem and wouldn't be available to the school district without the alternative program. Furthermore, it's a self-supporting program and is not being subsidized by the school district, nor does it draw from funds designated for Ashland's traditional public schools. Willow Wind also contributes to the district's general fund, which benefits all ASD students. In times of cuts in the public school system, these extra monies are even more crucial in the endeavor to provide quality education for all. I am so thankful I live in such a quality school district as Ashland, which has the vision to know that the same education does not work for all and therefore provides an alternative choice. Besides, it makes good economic sense that money that ASD would never see is now utilized to benefit more ofAshland's children. Thanks so much to Ashland School District and shame on you Daily Tidings for only giving half the story. I can only hope that my hometown newspaper simply made an oversight and will dutifully follow up with a full story of all the facts. Sheri Bowland Ashland Email your...
