It allows terminally ill patients to request assistance from a physician in committing suicide. From 1998 to 2004, 326 prescriptions have been written by doctors allowing patients to administer a lethal dose of medication; 208 individuals have taken their lives. That law has been challenged by the current administration in Gonzales v. Oregon (No. 04-623) and was just last week debated in front of the Supreme Court for the second time in eight years. Scott Peck I went on the Internet and was surprised to find nothing about his passing on his Web site. It’s certainly not because Peck himself was in any way in denial about death. In fact, the one time I met him he was doing a workshop on the issue of death and meaning. That was in 1989. I found him to be thoughtful, humorous, generous, and self-reflective — very willing to take risks with ideas. I also found him to be quite candid.
