A memorial service will be held for Mr. Donovan at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 23, at Fountain Plaza, Medford, Pastor Perry Atkinson will officiate. Hugh was born May 20, 1924 in Reno, Nevada. He moved to and grew up in Santa Clara, California where he graduated from Santa Clara University cum laude in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He served in the army during WW II and retired as Lt. Col. Following his retirement from active military duty, he was employed for 28 years by G.E. in San Jose in the Atomic Power Equipment Department. In 1963 he was selected national chairman of the Nuclear Material Management where he was the top executive officer responsible for control of all nuclear materials across the U.S. In 1994 Hugh moved to Medford. He was a true gentleman who extremely proud of his military service and years of employment with G.E. He contributed to many non-profit organizations that he felt worthy. He was an accomplished musician, and in his youth played in many bands, playing both the saxophone and piano. Survivors include; his sister, Sister Leonard Donovan of San Jose, CA; his three daughters, Blanca Hall-Pinner of Danville, CA. Rita Donovan-Roth of Ashland, and Teena Estafani of San Jose; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America or the Sisters of the Holy Family, Fremont CA. Jack Ronald Gunter Jack Ronald Gunter passed away on September 23, 2004 in Ashland, Oregon at the age of 78. A celebration of life will take place at 1 p.m. at the Bellview Grange in Ashland on Monday, October 25, 2004. He was born to Gerald Gunter and Hazel Gunter (Powell) on October 25, 1925 in Ashland, Oregon. He married Jean Pander in 1945 who preceded him in death in 1956. He married Betty Bushnell on November 11, 1957 who survives. Mr. Gunter was born and raised in Ashland. He served in the Navy in WWII. He worked in the timber industries in his younger years, as well as commercial fishing. He was a firefighter for Jackson County Fire District #5 for 19 years, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on cars. Survivors include his wife, Betty; One daughter Marietta Bianchi who lives in Sholow AZ; three sons, Gerald "Butch" Gunter, Steven Gunter, and Dan Gunter, all of Ashland. Six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, James Gunter. The family would appreciate donations to Jackson County Fire District #5 in memory of Jack Gunter. Contributions can be mailed to JCFD #5, 5811 South Pacific Hwy., Phoenix, OR 97535. Kurt Hartmann A private family service will be held for Kurt Hartmann, 78, of Ashland who died Friday, October 15, 2004 at his home following a brief illness. Born in 1926 in Passau, Germany, Kurt Hartmann came to the United States in 1938, when his family fled the Hitler regime. He lived in Albany, New York until 1944 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Philippines until 1946. Mr. Hartman attended Antioch College in Yellowsprings, Ohio and graduated from that institution with a degree in political science. In his younger years he worked for the National Labor Relations Board in North Carolina and Philadelphia. Subsequently, he became a journalist in West Virginia and Washington D.C. In 1955 he assumed ownership of the weekly newspaper in Seaside, CA, the News-Sentinel, and several years later founded a printing business, Printing Inc. In 1978, together with his wife, Kurt established a bookstore in Salinas, Books & Books. Since his retirement in 1989 he had returned to journalism, writing, among other publications, for the Monterey Herald's Alta Vista magazine, the Ashland Daily Tidings, and the Medford Mail Tribune. Kurt and Lou moved from the Monterey Peninsula to Ashland, Oregon in 2000 after each had lived in California for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, and two children by a prior marriage, Susan Gernaey of Rossmoor, CA, Thomas Mark Hartmann of Los Angeles, CA, and four grandchildren. Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. John P. Ernst John Price Ernst, 84, of Medford, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at his home.
