After a scoreless first half, Ashland (9-1, 8-1 SOC) scored on a penalty kick by Cory Fisher at the 55-minute mark, and the Comets’ Thaigo Olivevia tied it 1-1 10 minutes later. The final tally came following a collision near the goal mouth, and the Grizzlies’ Andrew Christlieb punched it in for the score. Ashland controlled the pace with its speed, but Crater (2-9, 2-7 SOC) kept it close in part through the fine play of senior stopper Paul Mellgren. The win allowed the Grizzlies to remain 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place teams North Medford (5-3 SOC) and Roseburg (5-3). Ashland has three league games remaining on its schedule, beginning with Saturday’s game against North Medford. Ashland needs a win to clinch at least a tie for first place. Girls Soccer Ashland scored two goals in the final 20 minutes, edging Crater 2-0 in an SOC contest at North Mountain Park on Tuesday. Ashland (4-6 SOC) began to break down the Crater defense in the 66th minute when Maddy Stokes drilled a shot from 25 yards out. Katie Cowger added another goal seven minutes later to ensure the Grizzlies’ victory. With the win, Ashland moved to within one game of Crater for fourth place in the SOC standings. Ashland, which is tied with Roseburg, travels to take on league-leading North Medford on Saturday.
