Grizz pick up SOC road win By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings Sophomore guard Hillary Huyett dropped in 24 points, including five 3-pointers and 10-12 free throws down the stretch, to lift the Grizzlies to a 64-56 Southern Oregon Conference win over the South Medford Panthers on the road. Senior post Marla Morin gave the Grizz a 2-0 lead on its first possession and they never looked back. The Grizz ran up a 19-10 first quarter lead and led by as many as 34-16 in the first half and 47-32 in the third as the Panthers struggled from the floor, missing their first six shots - most from close range. Ashland Daily Tidings/CHRIS MILLER But the Grizz looked like they were still on Christmas break - giving the Panthers a 3:12 non-scoring gift to close out the first half. After building up a 50-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Grizz got back into the giving mood, as South went on a 12-7 scoring run to cut the lead to 57-51 with 3:06 remaining. "Runs is the key word," Grizz head coach Steve Humann said after the game. "They (South) never got ahead." The Panthers cut the lead to within three at 59-56 with less than a minute remaining, but Huyett's free throws and steals by senior post Julia Sobolik and Morin iced the game. "We had to make some runs," Huyett said after the postgame meeting with her coach. "We had to keep our composure, but they (South) are a good team." After some halftime encouragement from Humann, the Grizz came out of the locker room on fire. Just like she did in the first half, Morin scored first in the third quarter, then Sobolik made back-to-back buckets as the Grizz stretched their lead to 40-26 with 4:31 remaining in the quarter. The Panthers were led by sophomore guard Katie Singler who scored 15 points and played nearly every minute of the game. Although the Grizzlies didn't play perfect basketball, Humann said they are taking this season one game at a time. "We are going to learn from this and go on to win a bunch of games � hopefully," Humann said.
