--> --> Sept. 24: Ashland boys soccer remains perfect; prep wrapup EUGENE - The victories keep coming for the Ashland High boys soccer team. The Grizzlies improved to 5-0 in non-conference play with a 3-0 victory over Churchill Saturday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, the Grizz got off the mat with a goal by senior Jesse Hodges nine minutes into the second half. Senior all-star Matt Sharp upped the lead to 2-0 minutes later on a penalty kick. Ashland wrapped up the scoring in the second minute of stoppage time when midfielder Gabe Mason took a Hodges' pass and buried the shot from the right flank for the 3-0 victory. Ashland ended up with 17 shots on goal, compared to the five by the Lancers and have now outscored their opponents 16-2 in the five preseason games. The Grizzlies open Southern Oregon Conference play Tuesday at Grants Pass. Ashland Girls Soccer At Ashland, the Grizz girls suffered their first defeat of the season with a 4-0 setback to Churchill Saturday at North Mountain Park. Ashland coach Iman Siadat praised the play of senior Darby Fallon and junior Aurora Dolan. The Grizzlies (2-1-2) host Grants Pass Tuesday at 4 p.m. at North Mountain Park in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams. Ashland Volleyball At Medford, the Grizzlies fared the best of Southern Oregon Conference squads as they finished third at the Rogue Valley Classic. The Grizzlies fell in the semifinals to top-ranked Gresham 15-8, 16-14. Gresham remained undefeated on the year with a 15-2, 17-15 victory over Roseburg. SOU Volleyball At Ashland, the Raiders halted a three-match losing streak with a 30-21, 30-16, 24-30, 31-29 victory over previously undefeated Western Baptist Saturday night at McNeal Pavilion. The Raider offense jump-started the effort as they took a 2-0 game advantage by converting 36 of its first 58 attack attempts. SOU (7-4, 2-3) held off the Warriors (7-4, 3-1) as the Raiders had four players with double-digit kills. Sophomore hitter Kristina Matchett led all players with 23 kills and added a career-high 20 digs. Senior Shelley Gorin added 16 kills and 13 digs, while sophomores Lindsey Aitchison (17) and Sara Tatom (12) posted career-highs in kills.
