University of Redlands head football coach Mike Maynard, who also applied for the head coaching job at Western State College of Colorado, told SOU last week that he would not take the job if offered, SOU athletic director Dennis Francois said this morning. Maynard, who has led the Bulldogs to nine conference championships and four NCAA Division III playoff appearances in 18 years, visited SOU on Jan. 3 for a tour of the campus and an extended interview. The other finalist, Rockford College offensive coordinator Steven Helminiak, visited SOU later that same week. “I wish (SOU) all the best,” Maynard said in a phone interview Monday. “That place is going to be an awesome opportunity for somebody.” The Raiders are expected to name their next head coach later this week. “We’re in the very final process of the search,” Francois said.
