The Grizzlies want more, she says. They want to advance to the Chiles Center, where the final three rounds of the Class 4A Girls Basketball State Championships will be played. ASHLAND HIGH SENIOR POINT GUARD ALYSSE CARLSON checks out the defense during a regular season game. Carlson and the rest of the Ashland High girls' basketball team play at Franklin on Wednesday in the first-round of the Class 4A Girls Basketball State Championships. Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland (14-10) will get its first chance to prove that Wednesday night at Franklin in a first-round matchup in Portland. "Making the playoffs is not content for us," Roupp said prior to Monday's practice at Mountain Avenue Gym. "We've got to do a repeat. We made it my freshman year and now we have two more seniors and we want it so bad." The Grizzlies are coming off Saturday's loss to North Medford, which broke a tie and gave the Black Tornado the No. 1 seed out of the Southern Oregon Conference. Ashland settled for No. 2, which yields a tougher road to the elite eight. Franklin (16-7) is the No. 2 seed out of the Portland Interscholastic League, finishing well behind first-place and sixth-ranked Lincoln (21-3). The winner of the Ashland-Franklin game will play either Pendleton, the top seed from the Intermountain League, or North Eugene, the fourth seed from the Midwestern League, in the second round Saturday. An Ashland-Pendleton game would be played at Pendleton, while an Ashland-North Eugene matchup would take place in Ashland. The Grizzlies don't know much about the Franklin Quakers. Ashland head coach Ken Lathen said Franklin likes to run and press, like most teams from the PIL. The Grizzlies' game plan, Lathen said, is to take the Quakers out of their element. "Our strategy is to try and get them into a halfcourt game and have them run their offense and have them shoot the ball," Lathen said. "If they're going to beat us they're going to have to shoot the ball. We'll try not to let them beat us inside. If they beat us, they're going to have to beat us from the perimeter." Lathen added that Franklin is both talented and well balanced. "They've got a big girls inside that is very athletic, she can stuff the basketball, and they've got a couple perimeter shooters that are pretty good," he said. "Normally when we play people they're not strong in both areas and so we're going to have to adjust our defense to be able to handle both." If the Grizzlies advance and get Pendleton in the second round, they'll probably stay in Portland another day before traveling to eastern Oregon for the third-round matchup. If the Grizzlies get North Eugene - a matchup they prefer, to cut down on travel time - they'll come back the next day. The game will be played at Franklin High School in southeast Portland (driving directions to the school are available at osaa.org). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio (580-AM). The tape-delayed broadcast won't hit the airwaves until about 8:30 p.m. Tidings Sports Editor Joe Zavala can be reached at 482-3456 or [email protected] DailyTidings.com Home Page Archives | Revels | Classifieds | Real Estate Guide | Weather | Subscribe | Contact Us Copyright 2005 Ashland Daily Tidings and Ottaway Newspapers All Rights Reserved Slippers Women's & Men's Slippers Ceramic Piggy Banks heloc libor rate Calenders 2005 Calender 2005 Accelerate Weightloss Products Memory Foam Mattress afsa studentloans home equity loans teleconferencing W2 Forms fasa student loans Matchmaking & Dating Scripts African Safari Conference Calls - $50/Month Security Systems student loan consolidation wholesale diamonds Currancy Exchange Online Casinos Community Fasa Student Loans Click Here Site Search: .:Advertisements:.
