The bill urges Congress and the federal leadership to adopt a plan and a timetable for withdrawing American troops from the ever-escalating conflict. “We need to start bringing our troops home,” he said from his Salem office on Monday, just hours after the press conference announcing the resolution. “A plan has to be developed and we need to start bringing our troops home. “I have been passionately against this war from the start. It’s not the right direction for our country.” Buckley, a Democrat, said the joint memorial, which has 19 sponsors from both the state Senate and House — all Democrats — caught momentum last week when a similar measure, although this one bipartisan, was introduced in Congress. “We’re hoping this is part of a groundswell,” he said. “We’re hoping other state legislatures join with us. A plan has to be developed, and there has to be an end in sight.” With no Republican support, Buckley said it is not likely that the resolution will pass. But, he said, it is still an important message to send to the nation’s leaders in Washington. “I think it reflects the great frustration that many of our constituents are feeling,” he said. “The fact is there is no plan for success and no timetable for withdrawal.” Buckley said many in the state House have been working all session on how to best address the safety of U.S. troops. “We’ve been united in our desire to take care of our local national guardsmen,” he said. “And it is in everyone’s best interest to have this war end in the most positive way possible.” Buckley said 54 Oregonians have been killed in Iraq. “This shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” he said. “As Oregonians, it is time to call on our government to bring our troops home.” Staff writer Robert Plain can be reached at 482-3456 x 3040 or [email protected].
