Music from St. Marks: New Music from an Old World Lydia McCauley and Ensemble Lydia McCauley and Ensemble will perform their Medford debut at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Fifth and Oakdale, Medford, as part of the Music at St. Mark's Concert Series. The program will feature songs that have been passed down through fourteen centuries and several countries including Galicia, Italy, Argentina, the British Isles and the Appalachian region of the U.S. McCauley began performing professionally in the spring of 1995 and formed her own independent music label, Brimstone Music, with husband Kurt Scherer in 1996. The couple began to build a group of talented musicians with many musical influences. McCauley's ensemble began performing original and traditional music at major festivals, performing art centers and venues on the West Coast from British Columbia to Southern California. Together they have recorded four full length albums which have played on radio stations across the U.S. and abroad. Lydia McCauley combines Folk and World Music elements. Reminiscent of medieval, Celtic, and Appalachian music, her original songwriting is laced with traditional tones that take her audience on a journey through the past and into the present. Her concerts have been described as " � joyful, poignant and luminous." Included in the ensemble are Phil Heaven, viola; Frank Jackson, recorders, pennywhistle and wooden flute; and Jason Darling, percussion. Influenced by classical, Celtic, folk, world music, and Middle Eastern tradition, this ensemble has jelled into a sound all their own, a blend which Lydia McCauley calls, "� new music from an old world."
