Work on the AQEM, which district officials hope will be a blueprint and used for long-range budget and planning, began in January. The district and board held several public meetings, school-board work sessions and meetings with faculty and on-site councils of district schools. In September and October, with the help of a Portland research firm, it conducted both a phone and online survey of how the community felt about the school district. The board made changes to the model at a work session last month. In January, the on-site councils and school faculty at each school will be asked to make final comments before the final AQEM plan goes before the board in February or March. "We have put in public input from our other meetings into the [AQEM] and this (meeting) gives the public a chance to make any comments," Superintendent Juli Di Chiro said. "It's a piece of what we listen to when making decisions." Another key piece of input has come from the on-site councils at each school, which includes faculty and parents. Di Chiro said having parents on the on-site committees is key to getting a better understanding on community feelings on different issues facing the school district. "They really give us good input," she said. "They're well-informed members of the public." The AQEM has several goals and models for the district, schools, teachers and parents. This includes five goals as a blueprint for instructional excellence and quality education. The AQEM also asks that all school staffs become a professional learning community that focuses on learning rather than teaching, develops a culture of collaboration, and judges its effectiveness based on student achievement results. With facilities and district property, the AQEM suggests continuing to lease the Briscoe school site to bring in needed revenue as well as doing the same for Lincoln Elementary, which will close in June. The AQEM is available on the district's Web site at www.ashland.k12.org.us. The school board is also slated to: o hear an overview on how each school did in the state's 2003-04 school report cards, which were released on Tuesday; o adopt the district's 2003-04 audit; and o approve the district's English language learner program handbook. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Ashland City Council Chambers, 1175 E.
