University prepares for spring powwow The 11th Annual Spring Powwow will return with traditional dancing, singing and handcrafted arts. The powwow, to be held in the McNeal Pavilion on the Southern Oregon University campus this weekend, is a time for the community and the students of the Native American Student Union (NASU) to come together and learn more about each other and for students to share a part of their culture with the community, according to powwow organizers. This year's event will be led by Master of Ceremonies Bob Tom. Other notables include Arena Director Don Moccasin, Head Man Billy David, Head Woman Taylor David and Host Drum Foxtail from Portland. The powwow will kick off with the Grand Entry, a Native American dance ceremony that will be followed with music, singing, and dance competitions - including a college student dance special sponsored by SOU President Elisabeth Zinser. The powwow will also feature a wide array of Native American arts, handmade crafts and jewelry for display and sale. Powwows have strict rules against alcohol and drug use in the entire area of the event. Doors open at noon on Saturday and Sunday. All are welcome and admission is free.
