--> --> Eighth annual Shakespeare Invite hits pool this weekend Ashland Daily Tidings Swimmers take your marks. The eighth annual Shakespeare Invitational, hosted by Superior Aquatics, takes to the Southern Oregon University pool this weekend. The three-day meet draws 378 competitive swimmers from Oregon and California. Superior Aquatics' Merribeth Midtlying said that the event still draws good competitors, even though Southwest Washington is not coming this year. "We have a lot of people coming, but not as much as last year," Midtlying said. "We have 12 total teams, and some of the California teams are nationally ranked." The SI differs from most swim races because instead of preliminary heats or semifinals, each event is a final. In addition to the races, the SI will showcase synchronized swimming during race intermissions, and Midtlying said the weekend has a family feel to it. "The gym will be crowded with concessions - people standing around and setting up their space, and kids playing everywhere." The SI is a no-cost event for spectators, as Superior Aquatics relies on raffles and concession stands to raise money. The racers get wet starting tonight at 5:30 p.m. Events on Saturday and Sunday run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Email your...
