Rimsky-Korsakov Quartet to perform two concerts in Ashland The internationally-renowned Rim-sky-Korsakov Quartet from St. Petersburg, Russia is coming to the Rogue Valley for two performances. The visit will help celebrate the 300th birthday of the musical city of St. Petersburg. The first concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. Second St., Ashland. The quartet will play a sampling of Russian chamber pieces from "Les Vendredis" (The Fridays), which were a notable feature of St. Petersburg's music scene in the late 19th century. The program will be preceded by a performance by the Siskiyou Strings, playing selections by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Strauss. The Siskiyou Strings, the advanced student ensemble of local violin instructor, Faina Podolnaya range in age from eight to 46. Podolnaya, herself a native of Kazakhstan a former Soviet republic and members of the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet studied under the same music teacher in Russia. Tickets are $10 for adults and $4 for children and are available at the door. A second performance by the group, sponsored by the Chamber Music Concert Series of Southern Oregon University will be presented by the Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at the First Baptist Church, 2004 Siskiyou Blvd. in Ashland. Music to be performed at this concert includes works by Glazunov, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Marge Wheeler. Wheeler is a composer who has recently moved to Mt. Shasta. The Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet has performed her music in St. Petersburg. The concert will mark the first time the Chamber Music Concert Series has presented a program entirely of Russian music performed entirely by Russian artists. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children and students. All tickets are general admission. The Rimsky-Korsakov Quartet was formed in 1939 and has always drawn highly successful players from various St. Petersburg's orchestras. The quartet strives to preserve the best traditions of the original "Vendredis," and is committed to bringing chamber music to as wide an audience as possible.
