The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford, and at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Angus Bowmer Theatre in Ashland. The Youth Symphony portion of the concert will feature Camile Saint-Saens� Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, with 2004 Concerto Competition winner Allegra Archer as soloist. Archer, a junior at Ashland High School, has been playing the cello for nine years and joined YSSO when she was in the fourth grade. She plans to major in music and hopes to attend a major conservatory. Archer was the District Solo and Ensemble Competition winner in the cello division in both her freshman and sophomore years at AHS. At the state competition, she placed fourth in her freshman year and second in her sophomore year. Dedicated to her instrument, Archer has attended several summer camps, including the Advanced Suzuki Institute at Stanford University in California, the National Cello Institute and the Britt Music Festival's Summer Music Camp. She also was chosen from a nationwide audition to perform in a master class at the Suzuki Association of the Americas National Conference in 2004. Other works performed by the Youth Symphony will include "Fanfare for Brass from La Peri," by Paul Dukas, and the "Academic Festival Overture" by Johannes Brahms. The Youth Orchestra will play "Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld" by Jacques Offenbach; "Variations on a Theme by Handel" by Maurice Whitney; and Symphony No. 5 "Reformation (Finale)" by Felix Mendelssohn, arranged by Vernon Leidig. Southern Oregon University music professor Cynthia Hutton leads the Youth Orchestra and Youth Symphony. YSSO's youngest group, Youth Strings, led by associate conductor Faina Podolnaya, will perform "Harmonious Blacksmith" and "Minuet from Alcina" from Suite No. 5 in E major, by Georges Frederic Handel; Theme from Canon in D, by Johann Pachelbel; and "Sinfonia Paraphrase" from Trio in A minor, by Georg Philipp Telemann. Now in its 16th year, the nonprofit YSSO has close to 187 young members playing in its three orchestras: 70 in the symphony group, another 70 in the orchestra, and 47 in strings. Most of the students also play in their school orchestras and bands, and study with a private instructor. Admission to YSSO is by audition and members must be willing to attend Sunday rehearsals throughout most of the school year and practice at home. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater, 23 S. Central, Medford and Paddington Station in Ashland.
