The Roe v Wade case ruled the a person has the right to privacy until the third trimester, and this is a clear right established by the court. I will not tolerate any threat to the right of women and teens to control their own lives and bodies. I remember coat hangers and I will not go back to the sacrifice of females for male control. I also am outraged by Alito’s record on disabled rights and I so appreciate Sen. Wyden reflecting the truth of his Oregon state by coming out against Alito. In Oregon we believe in human rights. I will not rest until every woman has the human right to choose her own destiny and has full access to contraceptive information and reproductive choice. Linda Richards Ashland OSW’s ‘Crucible’ production is a play worth seeing Arthur Miller knew how to tell a good story, and Peter Alzado and the cast at Oregon Stage Works know how to bring it to life. “The Crucible” introduces us to a man and a woman working out the strains in their own relationship but set in a society gone terribly wrong — where a narrow expression of religion has planted a fear so deep that humanity is lost, where the top legal figure lacks mercy and balance, where people enlarge their own identities and fortunes by accusing others, ignoring their own complicity. Such hysteria! Watching a good man struggle with his choices — of overcoming personal guilt, of keeping his good name, of standing up to social injustice — left me deeply moved. I ached for his dilemma, and that of his wife. So many losses. While the cast wore the clothes of the Salem witchcraft trials, the author had responded to the political vogue of post-World War II McCarthyism, and Miller’s capacity for the timeless let me envision the cast wearing today’s attire. Thank you, good artists, for enriching our lives and strengthening our courage. I urge everyone to see this excellent production. Marjorie Ratner Ashland Alternatives to abortion not so acceptable Within the past two weeks the New York Times reported the death of a seven-year girl resulting from battery involving a stepfather and the mother of her five siblings. Nitzmary had suffered from molestation and long-term abuse. She was the fourth child in two months to die in that city while wards of the court but in the custody of their parents or step parents. Many police officers, probation officers and welfare workers know these are not isolated cases. They regularly see children subjected to long-term physical and emotional abuse. As a probation officer, I saw many tragic cases. One was particularly relevant to the on-going debate about abortion and morning after contraceptives being among the options given to desperate women. Four children of a pregnant mother who was in a mental hospital were wards of the court. The non-working father refused to use birth control because of religious beliefs even though warned by doctors when the second child was conceived. The state is an expensive and inadequate parent for a child. Living in comfortable surroundings with two children families as many of us do, it is hard to realize the anguish of women unable to face bringing a child she cannot care for into the world. Better education and caring families are the best remedy for solving this continuing debate. However, bringing an unwanted child into an unaware world to face the tortures of physical abuse or a slow death is not an acceptable alternative. Ramona DeVaul Ashland Asghar is wrong about holy day exemption I disagree with Rob Asghar (Jan. 26). I think our government has an obligation to defend us even if it means killing Muslim terrorists on a Muslim holy day. When Muslim terrorists murder innocent men, women and children, they don’t care if it’s Yom Kippur or Christmas. All they care about is murdering as many people as possible.
