On Sept. 11, 2001, four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group, killed 2,977 people. The terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the upper floors of the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City and a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., just outside Washington, D.C. Passengers on a fourth plane, which was headed for Washington, attempted to recover control of the plane, which crashed near Shanksville, Penns. Most of the attack’s aftermath was broadcast live by every network. Since then The New York site has been rebuilt to include the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum, office buildings, retail space and a transportation hub. A memorial park surrounds two reflecting pools set within the footprints of the North and South towers. The names of the people who were killed in the attacks are etched in bronze around the edges of the pools. The museum’s main exhibition space is located seven stories below the 9/11 Memorial at the bedrock foundations of the World Trade Center and includes displays of artifacts from the attacks, interactive exhibits and contemplative areas. Two of the planned four World Trade Center buildings have been completed, and 1 WTC is expected to be finished this fall. At 1,776 feet, it will stand taller than the original buildings. Remembering Today, Sept. 11, marks the 13-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Locally, Ashland Fire & Rescue will hold a ceremony near the flagpole at Fire Station 1 (455 Siskiyou Blvd.) to reflect and remember. The ceremony will commence at 6:58 a.m. (the West Coast time when the South Tower collapsed) and last for a few minutes. Afterward, refreshments will be available in the station, where a piece of the World Trade Center is on display. In New York City, the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum will be open to victims’ families and first responders after today’s anniversary ceremony, which will include the traditional reading of the names of the 2,983 men, women and children who died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93.
