--> --> Oct. 8: Grizz harriers take local meet By Sarah Petersen Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland High boys cross country team ran away with a first place title with 58 points at the annual State of Jefferson Invitational Saturday at Lithia Park. South Eugene dominated in the girls division taking top honors with 50 points, while the Grizz girls finished fifth, accumulating 90 points. Ashland's top finisher on the boys side was Asha Stout-Wolf, who took fifth in 16 minutes, 57.9 seconds on the winding 5,000-meter course. "Asha was one of four guys who had a good race today," head coach Bob Julian said. "This was by far one of Asha's best races. Our depth pulled us through today. Some of the guys are pretty tired from this past week of practice. It's good to know that we can still win even though we didn't run that well." Not far behind Stout-Wolf were three other Grizzlies - freshman Andy Wright (eighth in 17:08.6), senior Chris Faudree (11th in 17:18.1) and junior Jeff Olsen (12th in 17:18.7). "We had the home course advantage today," Stout-Wolf said. "All week we have been working on intervals on this course so when I saw the interval marks where we had been training I just pushed myself. I had a lot of mental preparation before this meet. This sport is all mental." Other finishers for the boys were juniors Kyle Novak (22nd) and Dave Richardson (23rd). On the girls side Sam Kezer from Crater won the event in 20:24. The Grizzlies' top finisher was sophomore Gretchen Buettner who took 14th in 21:38.8. "We are working on staying together as a team," Buettner said. "We don't have our top runner (Kendall Clark) so it makes the rest of us have to work a lot harder. Today I was focusing mainly on the girls from our conference because that's what counts at districts." Other finishers for Ashland were juniors Mariah Mayfield (16th) and Therese McCaffrey (19th). Freshmen Rihana Patterson (21st), Claire Chavez (25th) and Briana Lesher (32nd) rounded out the Ashland effort. "We were a little down," Julian said. "I trained them pretty hard this week. We didn't have a very good meet today. I am going to back off a bit this next week so I can have them peek in a few weeks before districts. But we'll be back."
