A: We sell handmade leather shoes from Europe and accessories, such as handbags and wallets, and also socks and tights. We support small, independent manufacturers doing high quality craft work and help them make a fair wage. We sell some jewelry by Northwest artists. Q: Your shop, Village Shoes, is obviously successful and full of customers. Why? We have unique and interesting products and people get wowed by them when they walk in here. Like these edgey AS98 Italian leather shoes are made in Bosnia to give them jobs. They are a mod fashion statement, a wedge. They’re high-end, $269. How did you get interested in shoes and come to be an owner here? A; I got a job in a shoe store in high school, in New York state. I’ve always loved shoes. I worked here seven years before buying it in 2009. I’m the third owner. The economic downturn was definitely hard but we survived. We had to tone down our inventory and watch our price point and work with what people were doing. Q: Your customers, mostly women, what are they seeking? A: Now people are more comfortable with spending a little more on shoes. We have boots going up to $400. That’s as high as we can go. People will always love Frye boots and they trust the name and durability. They go for $250 to $400 here. We have boots for men, but as you can see, there aren’t men in here. For guys, we’re moving to the more casual, like sandals for spring. Men here don’t dress up like the women do. Women will say, “Please honey, try these on,” but the men don’t buy them.
