SOU ROUNDUP Dodge repeats as Frontier Conference OPOY as 15 Raiders make all-league SOU quarterback named top offensive player third year in a row By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 7:22 pm By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 7:22 pm » Social News WHITEFISH, Mont. — Austin Dodge completed a career sweep of the Frontier Offensive Player of the Year award to lead 15 Southern Oregon Raiders on the all-conference list, which was voted on by Frontier coaches and released Thursday by the league office. Receiver Dylan Young and lineman Drew Gibson joined Dodge on the All-Frontier offensive first team. Receivers Matt and Ryan Retzlaff, lineman Max Proudfit and center Ronald Rylance were second-team offense. Defensively, defense end Daniel Breaux and defensive back Dustin Fretwell were on the first team, while linebackers Heston Altenbach and Laurence Calcagno, defensive back Karrington Jones and lineman Joseph Lealofi were on the second team. Kicker Aldrick Rosas was first-team special teams, and punter Thomas Giddens was selected to the second team. Dodge, a senior who's won three straight OPOY awards, leads the NAIA again this year at 354 passing yards per game, throwing 41 touchdown passes and eight interceptions at a 65.8-percent completion rate. With 4,248 passing yards, this is his third consecutive 4,000-yard season. He's been held under 300 passing yards just twice in 12 games and tossed multiple TD passes in all but one. Young, who is SOU's new career TD catch record-holder (29), has 18 TD catches this season with an average of 118.1 yards per game. Ryan Retzlaff leads the team in receptions at 76, racking up 10 scores and 95.2 yards per game, while Matt Retzlaff has 39 catches for 487 yards and four TDs. Gibson, Proudfit and Rylance are responsible for helping the Raiders to an average of 5.3 yards per rush, and for allowing Dodge to be sacked only 21 times. Fretwell, SOU's shutdown corner, has one interception and 35 tackles to his credit, while Breaux has 60 tackles and four sacks from the line. Calcagno (127) and Altenbach (108) were among the country's leaders in tackles, Lealofi has 40 tackles in his first season as a Raider, and Jones has snagged two interceptions. Rosas has been just as valuable as the nations leading scorer among kickers — making 12 field goals, including five of 30-plus yards, and 67 of 68 point-after tries — as he's been on the kickoff team, where 63 of his 91 kickoffs have gone for touchbacks. Giddens is averaging 41.8 yards per punt with a long of 66, sticking six inside the 20-yard line. Carroll linebacker Sean Blomquist repeated as the Frontier Defensive Player of the Year. Carroll's Mike Van Diest and Eastern Oregon's Tim Camp were the Co-Coaches of the Year. Men's Basketball At Atherton, Calif., the hot-handed Southern Oregon men's basketball team went 8-for-16 from deep and held off 22nd-ranked Cal Maritime 74-70 on Friday afternoon at Menlo's Bud Presley Classic. The 17th-ranked Raiders (8-1 overall), who never trailed in the second half, were led by Eric Thompson's 21 points, Jordan West's 15 points and seven rebounds, and Tim Weber's 12 points and eight assists. Three days after getting exactly zero points off the bench in a win at Simpson, SOU received a spark in the form of freshman Ben DeSaulnier's career-high 13 on 4-of-6 shooting. Despite shooting 50 percent from the floor (27-for-54), the Keelhaulers trailed by as many as 16 in the second half. Roman Delgado scored 19 points for them, and Harley Ruder added 14. Leading 44-37 with 15 minutes left, SOU hit four of its next five 3-point attempts – two by Thompson, one by Weber and the last by Kenny Meyer (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs) – to take a 58-44 lead that was extended to 16 points by West's jumper. The Keelhaulers chipped away with some sharp shooting of their own, cutting it to 69-66 with a Ruder triple at the two-minute mark. Following two West free throws, they made it a three-point game again when Delgado made a jumper with 30 seconds left, but one free throw from Thompson and two from DeSaulnier put the game away. Thompson went 8-for-12 from the field and made all three of his 3-point attempts. West was 5-for-7, going 2-for-3 from downtown, and Joel Spear chipped in eight points. The Raiders shot 51 percent (26-for-51) as a team, going over 50 for the fifth time this season. The Raiders have their final tuneup for Cascade Conference play at 4 p.m. today against Menlo.
