The fact that many of us would have preferred they express their community spirit with a building more to scale and in keeping with the obvious intent of any version of the Big Box ordinance was clearly missing the point that they knew better than us what was in our own interests. It comes as no surprise now that they express their selfless dedication to the community in a demand for 2 million of our community bucks under a Measure 37 claim. This kind of community spirit we could do with a great deal less of. Or maybe they, and we, should just get real about their actual motivation to build the Big Box. Not that turning vast profits isn't an old and venerated motive, but let's at least start by calling it what it is. Susan Marsden Ashland Not all right Friday’s column was the third time John Darling has written about the out-of-control behavior of a group of teens in our community — applauding their “free will” and wild, reckless youth. Darling is a counselor who knows the inside details of Kevan Thatcher-Stevens and his friends’ exploits leading up to his death this spring. He knows Kevan was driving drunk, drugged and without a license, deliberately playing the game he invented with his friends called “Chase” when he killed Charles Branch. Darling also hears the strories and rumors that since Kevan’s death, “willful” juniors and seniors have been arrested for robbery, drunk driving and continuing to play the chase game. Now, there is a new “loud, audacious, untamed” group of kids in the middle school who are supposedly carrying vodka in water bottles to parties and school and being rushed to the emergency room with alcohol poisoning. Yet, Mr. Darling continues to criticize parents for trying to help their kids. He advises his girlfriend not to make any demands on her teens because they “won’t be able to think for themselves.” He even has the audacity to mock one family who made the extremely painful decision to seek outside help to save their daughter’s life. The day after Darling’s column was published, Leah Castillo was killed by spirited teens “making their own choices” and “exercising their free will.” Does Darling still think “these kids are all right”? Jahnna Beecham Ashland Thank you We are kids from Helman Elementary School. We are second- and third-graders. We got to learn how to knit. We each knitted a critter (a small stuffed animal). It was really fun. We got to knit when our teachers read to us, and other times, too. We want to say thank you to Ashland Schools Foundation, who gave us money for the needles and yarn. And we want to thank Websters for giving us the yarn and needles for the same price they paid for them. And thank you to Starbucks for giving us the plastic cups with lids that hold our knitting. We could not have done it without Websters, Starbucks and Ashland Schools Foundation! Vika, Hannah, Eileen and all the second- and third-graders at Helman School Living a lie There is now irrefutable evidence that our president lied to all of us about the reasons we invaded Iraq. It comes from Richard Dearlove, who was head of Britain’s MI-6. This is worse than Nixon’s dirty tricks and Clinton’s affair. This lie has killed many innocent people and shattered countless lives. We live a lie when we fail to hold leaders accountable for their lies. By not calling now for impeachment, we are saying that we condone hypocrisy, pseudo-democracy, and murdering thousands of Americans and Iraqis for strategic control of energy resources that we have no right to. Patriotism demands that we insist on the ideals of democracy, not that we support the "leaders" who cynically destroy them. Our senators were lied to and supported the president because of these lies. I am surprised that they haven’t already expressed outrage at these horrendous lies and deeds. The first courageous step is to come to terms with what we know is true: America’s president lied to America’s people to create an unnecessary war. I ask Sens. Wyden and Smith to take that step. Begin impeachment proceedings. It’s really no more or less than your duty. It’s also the first step toward restoring America’s integrity.
