Firefighter Hoagland, using a thermal imaging camera bought with donations to the Phoenix Volunteer Firefighters Association, was able to find the driver in the dead of night. That’s why, said Fire Chief Matt Lichtenstein, donations to the volunteer wing of the city’s fire department are so important. “It helps them to purchase life-saving equipment,” Lichtenstein said. And this weekend is the perfect time to help the volunteer fire department to get more of the critical equipment they need in order to assist the city’s smaller, full-time department. On Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Phoenix Grange, the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce is hosting the annual Italian Dinner and Talent Show. “It’s the real stuff,” said Liz Sauro, the director of the Chamber of Commerce. “Real Italian sausage. It’s just like an old family dinner. And there are so many great singers.” The meal, she said, is authentic Italian cuisine: lasagna, meatballs and sausage like only the Italians make it. Sauro said she makes special arrangements to get the special delicacy. And the only thing to top the meal, she said, is the entertainment. “The music is great,” she said. “They sing all the old-fashioned classics.” Of course, who else would be performed at a real Italian dinner other than Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, among others. The performers are some of the most well-known faces in Phoenix. She said her husband Dan, who ran for mayor last election, usually sings a Dean Martin song, though ear problems will probably prevent him from signing this year. City Council President Carlos DeBritto is known as one of the best singers in town, though at Monday’s council meeting he would not promise to perform. There will also be a silent auction, between the meal and the performance, featuring Harry and David products, a dinner at Omar’s and an assortment of gift baskets.
