The chance of seeing somebody zooming by in an electric vehicle is increasingly likely in Ashland. Gus Janeway, co-owner of the Ashland bicycle shop Piccadilly Cycles, confirms that there has been a rapid rise in interest for electric-assist bicycles among his customers. “One of the most exciting things we see in our shop is the number of people who come in to consult with us on reinventing their approach to transportation,” says Janeway. Piccadilly Cycles will be among the exhibitors on hand to help educate and excite people about the future of transportation at southern Oregon’s Electric Vehicle & Hybrid Show, an event hosted by the Ashland Lions Club. The second annual event, set to take place outside of ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland on Sept. 12, will allow people to view brand new sponsor-provided electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as vehicles that have been converted to run on electric or hybrid power. Visitors can mingle with local dealers and sponsors and ask vehicle owners questions about their experiences. Coinciding with the first day of National Drive Electric Week, the event aims to highlight the benefits and availability of electric and hybrid vehicles, while also raising funds for the Ashland Lions Club — an international service organization that serving the Rogue Valley since 1938. In addition to displaying a range of new electric-assist bicycles at the event, Piccadilly Cycles is supplying the $2,400 raffle prize: a bright red Currie Technologies IZIP E3 Zuma electric bicycle. New this year at the show is the cutting edge FarmDogg ATV, back in the Rogue Valley after recently being featured at the White House. Rogue Rovers Chief Executive Officer Michelle Brandao developed this fully electric ATV for small-scale and specialty farmers. The vehicle uses cloud-based technology with software that collects data like weather patterns, fertilizer applications and watering cycles. While other electric utility vehicles from competitors like Polaris and John Deere are modifications of gas-powered vehicles, the Rogue Valley-engineered and assembled FarmDogg caters to consumers who require more utility and function, explains Brandao. “The FarmDogg is designed to integrate with other systems — like attachments, data collection and robotics, so it's a platform more than just being a vehicle,” says Brandao. Among the many vehicles on display, a must-see will be the two new model S Tesla sedans, according to former Lions Club president and this year’s event Chairman Pete Jorgenson. Tesla is a California-based technology company that designs and manufactures completely electric cars. Since the company’s birth in 2003, it's put 50,000 Tesla vehicles on the road and 500 Supercharger stations to keep them moving. Tesla’s success is a testament to the rising popularity of electric vehicles worldwide. Electric car sales have doubled every year for the past three years, according to academics at the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg. For those Rogue Valley residents who have already hopped aboard the electric-powered bandwagon, the Lions Club encourages owners of electric or hybrid vehicles to display them at the event. The opportunity to learn more about alternatives to gas- or diesel-powered vehicles runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at ScienceWorks, 1500 E. Main, Ashland.
