Rains is first to admit that filling the shoes of Livia Genise, a seasoned former Broadway actor who resigned after 14 years at Camelot, will not be easy. “She’s been such a powerhouse here,” Rains said. Rains will take over immediately. He was initially scheduled to begin with the 2017 season, but the move was stepped up with the resignation of Genise Thursday (see related story, this page). Camelot Executive Director Dann Hauser said Rains' experience over the past seven seasons should give the theater continuity. The 2017 season, Camelot’s 35th, will be announced mid-May, and should include a similar mix of classic Broadway musicals, dramas and musical spotlight series, Hauser said, adding that Rains would have "full control" of the lineup. Rains said that catering to what audiences want to see while showcasing edgier material can be a challenge. “There’s no magic formula for designing a season for a theater,” Rains said. Although he's looking forward to showcasing some edgy or controversial plays, he said he will consider his audience. He said that certain dramatic productions he's drawn to, such as the work of playwrights David Mamet or Sam Shepard, don't typically draw in crowds necessary to keep the lights on. “You have to do it in such a way that it’s what people want to see,” Rains said. “It’s a business.” Rains has starred in and directed many productions at Camelot, most recently playing the role of Amahr Reddy in "Solomon's Blade" in February and directing "The Manchurian Candidate" last fall. Rains said he's drawn to the technical side of play production, such as whether the set elements fit the show or ensuring costumes are ready in time. Rains is looking forward to taking full advantage of the advanced technical equipment in Camelot's 2011-built venue. “We are very lucky here to have a lot of unique tools at our disposal regarding storytelling,” Rains said. Within the $2.5 million James Morrison Collier Theatre building is a soundboard with state-of-the art mixing, providing the technology to create productions' "soundscapes."
