But it was clear in 2002 and 2003, and is even more clear today, that the Bush administration omitted from its public interpretations of the intelligence reports all caveats, warnings about forgeries and untrustworthiness, and CIA judgments of unreliability and of “not proven.” In their parlance, the warmongers “stovepiped” (ignored the existing intelligence channels) the “facts” they wanted the White House to hear and to publicize. It is clear that Cheney, Rumsfield and Condi did lie. This does not mean that Mr. Bush lied: He would have had to know what he was talking about to do so. It would be nice if the second part of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s work went forward — that was the part that was supposed to look at how the White House actually used or “fixed” the intelligence it received. That report ws scheduled to appear in October 2004, before the election. Fat chance. And fat chance the American people will ever see such a report. Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Censorship of movie appalling The Oregon Nurses Association reserved a room at the Smullen Center to show the movie “Wal-Mart — The High Cost of Lower Prices” on Sunday Nov. 13. It is outrageous censorship that on Friday morning they were informed that the Smullen Center couldn’t be used. All of us who came to see the picture will find other venues to look at that movie, but Asante should be ashamed and the public should be informed. Mary Ruth Wooding Ashland Community may be meddling I’ve been reading the back-and-forth on proposed city input into police procedures with some growing concern. Knowing when and how to provide either guidance or enforcement, in any situation and to any degree necessary, is the skill set of a seasoned officer. While ability, training and procedures are prerequisite, and the APD’s own policies play a part, it also involves maturity, sound judgment and authority developed through experience. We have plenty of officers who defuse situations, provide warnings and offer advice to people who have made mistakes, in such a way as to instill more consciousness in those receiving. There is no doubt in my mind that these same officers will respond adequately to anything that threatens public safety, and they will not allow a crime wave to sweep our fair city. However, there is considerable doubt in my mind that their advanced skill set can be defined adequately by any committee, much less mandated onto others. We should let them lead by example, since that’s what they’re doing already. Myron K. Hudson Ashland DeBoer’s efforts to be applauded In a letter to the Tidings dated Nov. 1, Nan Schwarz voiced concern about a proposed homeless center/shelter. Couldn’t we as a community come together to find a solution, perhaps setting a standard for other cities in America? Indeed, let’s recognize Alan DeBoer for what he is: a good Samaritan. He should be lauded for his concern for the down and out! I know firsthand, because he is helping me currently to reside in my home. At one point in my life, I was homeless with four children and Alan has been my brother and good Samaritan. We in Ashland could come together to form a homeless shelter/center that could be run like a Kibbutz (where everyone who stays there works and contributes), or perhaps with an organizational set-up like the Ashland Community Food Co-op. There were many of us who jumped at the chance to pay that $100 to join and then get monthly discount coupons, which have more than paid us back for our membership. Think of it, if we each just gave $100 to start a homeless shelter/center, it would thrive and be an asset to our community. Just an idea, but the dialogue needs to begin. Surely there is a way to help this ostracized part of society which we all feel bad about.
