I’ve often thought and felt the same way about why people believe in the things they do, despite a lack of significant evidence. I have also had experiences where the Universe itself seems to be “made” of intelligence, design, and “meaning” — even felt there is an intelligent “someone” out there who hears and responds to my state of mind. I “know” that there’s no one there and yet sometimes behave as though the universe is in some kind of dialogue with me. To paraphrase Walt Whitman: Because the universe is vast it contradicts itself. The great physicist Heisenberg once said that what you observe is never nature itself, but nature exposed to your line of questioning. So who knows? Maybe all of these viewpoints have truth to them, depending on our point of view. At the core of all of my beliefs is a deep uncertainty. I especially notice this when I’m trying to convince someone else that I’m right! Because I am a part of the wholeness of things I can never fully understand or “know” that wholeness, no matter how much I may want to. I try to hold all of my beliefs and experiences lightly and realize that though I may find some truth I’ll never know the truth. Rather than fight this fact, I’d rather try and develop a knack for balance and kindness which should be useful here on Earth or in whatever Heaven or Hell I may find myself in tomorrow.
