School district holds surplus sale By Amber Fossen Ashland Daily Tidings The Ashland School District is clearing out its closets for a districtwide surplus sale. School officials said all ASD schools will participate in the sale designed to generate funds and create more space. Volunteers have inventoried district materials, and, what the district can no longer use it will try to sell. The sale will kick off at 3 p.m. Friday in the Ashland Middle School gym. According to Briscoe Principal Michelle Zundel, the district is bulging with outdated items. "It became apparent that there were storage spaces throughout the district with antiquated materials," Zundel said. "When I talked to the maintenance department, we didn't have the room to store them." Zundel worked with a group of volunteers on the sale, which will display numerous goods like desks, bookshelves and even a few good reads. "We've gone through all of the libraries in the school district and books that have a very old copyright date or have not been checked out in a number of years will be for sale," Zundel said. Daniel DeNeui, volunteer and Southern Oregon University psychology professor, said Briscoe's closure prompted the sale. "With Briscoe closing, there's been a lot of overflow surplus stuff they need to get rid of," DeNeui said. "The other schools, what they've found as they shift around is there are nooks and crannies filled with things that can no longer be used." School officials said state law determines what schools can do with publicly funded items. According to Zundel, the school can either sell materials no longer needed or bury them in a landfill. Having a sale will allow the district to raise money for its general fund while cutting back on unnecessary bulk. School officials said money from the sale has not been allocated but will go into the general fund. "The positive side of all this is that we will raise revenues that are much needed and we will increase storage space which is needed," Zundel said. The surplus sale will run from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday; from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the AMS gym. An employee preview will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday for district employees. For more information contact the District Office at 482-2811.
