--> --> Voget upsets Skipper for title Ashland Daily Tidings EUGENE - Ashland High's Cameron Voget upset Sandy's Tommy Skipper to win the Class 4A javelin title at the state track and field meet Saturday at Hayward Field. Voget, a senior who took seventh-place in his previous two state appearances, won with a throw of 201-10, his season-best with the new international javelin. The monster throw came on Voget's third preliminary throw. He didn't improve in the finals and, as it turned out, didn't have to. Skipper's best throw was a 194-10, good enough for second place. Daniel Brant of Franklin took third with a 194-1 and Scott Burbach of Gresham was fourth with a 192-0. "I'm actually not too surprised, because he's been there and experience really counts," Ashland track and field coach Bob Julian Jr. said. Voget's victory was good for 10 Ashland team points, which was enough to put the Grizz boys in a four-way tie for 23rd place at the 50-team meet. Churchill won the boys event with 55 points and Klamath Union was second at 43. Benson ran away with the 4A girls meet by scoring 100 points, double the final point total of runner-up South Eugene. Ashland's only other state qualifier, Kendall Clark, took eighth in Friday's 800-meter girls qualifying heat in a personal-record 2:25.54, which wasn't good enough for a finals berth. Only the top three placers from each of the two heats plus the next two fastest times qualified for Saturday's finals. Emily McMahon of Mountain View ended up winning the girls 800 in 2:14.26. "It went great," Julian said. "You have two kids, both get personal records and one wins state. Pretty good." Julian added that Voget was far from shocked at his state championship-winning throw. "He came in to win the thing, with the mentality that `I'm going to win this,'" Julian said, "so to me, he had a kind of aura of, `this is what I expected to do.'" Voget next year will be attending Pacific Lutheran University, an NCAA Division III school. Email your...
