(Source: U.S. Treasury, Bureau of the Public Dept..) The current annual global military budget is approximately $956 billion. Almost half of that is attributed to the U.S., at more than $400 billion. (Source: FY’ 05 Budget Request by the Bush Administration.) How can anybody not have a problem with that? Hal Davis Ashland Keep plates free of special interest The proposed “choose life” license plate is just another example of how this country is being turned into a theocracy by the current administration. This plate is one more blatant attempt to promote the right-wing religious agenda. It implies that anyone who supports the legal right of women to make their own reproductive choices is against “life.” I seriously doubt the supporters of this issue have ever witnessed a girl hemorrhaging to death due to an illegal, botched abortion, or had to watch the suffering (and even death) of a child who was unwanted and abused, but whose mother was denied legal termination. I have seen these things, and they were life altering. Adoption is a fine thing, but is not always a viable option, and is just being used as an excuse by anti-choice groups. A “choose life” plate can, in no way, be compared to the other special interest plates currently offered in Oregon — these represent issues that affect all Oregonians, regardless of religious or political beliefs. Special interest plates should represent all and offend none. The Bible states that religious activities should be carried out in private, to avoid the appearance of hypocrisy (Matt. 6:1-8). Susan Bauer Medford Coverage was its own spectacle I read, with special interest, the set of articles concerning the standoff and arrest of Dirk Binder. The true tragedy of the matter is not anything done (or not done) by Mr. Binder or the police. It was the spectacle that the Daily Tidings made of a soul who chose the wrong drug for his chemical imbalance! The write-up was appropriate for News of the Weird, not for an entire front page spread. Talk about imbalance! Compliments to the writer(s) and layout — except for the full-spread page one placement. This made a circus spectacle of Dirk and the Daily Tidings, in my humble opinion. My heart goes out to Dirk and his parents! The man needs a serious conversation with Godly people. He found Barnum and Bailey instead. Keith Pendleton Former Ashland Resident An election lost is not the end Bush won the election, the Republicans control the congress, and conservatives are in charge. The liberals lost and need to get over it, Chris Thompson tells us. I voted for Kerry because I was voting against Bush. I have gotten over Kerry’s loss and I have even come to accept Bush’s win. But I will not accept what the winners are doing to my country. Now it’s time for the winners to get over it. Stop the celebrating and start paying attention. Wake up, our future is at stake. Eric Ring Ashland Article plainly advocates According to an article written by Robert Plain (April 26) about Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now!”, the program has not been carried on Jefferson Public Radio because it is “advocacy journalism.” I agree that it is, and, in my opinion, so was the article by Mr. Plain. His enthusiasm for Goodman’s program was in “Plain” view. JPR, as I understand it, is subsidized by government as well as private contributions. JPR, I think, makes an effort to be politically impartial. If Amy goodman’s show is carried, that will, in my opinion, nullify any attempt at impartiality, and will require JPR to carry Rush Limbaugh in order to restore some balance.
