Photos courtesy Helga Motley The Snow White Project opens for “kids of all ages” on Friday at Oregon Stage Works. Written by Eve Smyth, who also plays the Queen, the play is a short, fast-paced spoof of favorite tales from the Brothers Grimm. Peter Alzado, producing artistic director, calls it “a rollicking comedy that makes a wonderful experience for parents and their children, and a very special treat for grandparents and their grandchildren.” Six performances will run Friday through Nov. 6, with early curtains at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays. Tickets will be available at the door, $10 per person for all ages. When Snow White dons her little red riding hood and the Frog Prince demands a kiss, the audience knows the journey to the end of this fairy tale classic will be unusual. A poisoned watermelon, a fugitive dwarf, and a mirror distracted by pastry make every effort to derail the comedy, but though it may look as if it’s headed for a Grimm collision, rest assured — all will live happily ever after. Children play most of the characters in OSW’s “Snow White.” Sponsored by the Carpenter Foundation and the City of Ashland, the play is produced by Oregon Stage Works’ Theatre for Youth, which offers acting and improv classes for young people ages four through high school. Bruce Wallace Hostetler directs, and the cast includes three adult improv actors from Second Saturday Players working with six young actors from the Theatre for Youth. Hostetler is an active Ashland director whose most recent work includes “Copenhagen,” “Nickel and Dimed,” and “Beauty Queen of Lenane” for Oregon Stage Works, and also As You Like It for the Sun Valley Shakespeare Festival, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” for Rogue Opera, “Carousel” for Rogue Music Theatre, and “Toad of Toad Hall” for Southern Oregon University. Smyth is lead instructor for the Theatre for Youth and performs with the improv groups Second Saturday Players and The Hamazons. Her one-woman show, a “strictly adult” version of Little Red Riding Hood called What Big Teeth You Have, received critical acclaim in Seattle and San Francisco, and was recently produced by Oregon Stage Works. The Seattle Weeklywrote, “Smyth is a delight ... leading us around the entire province of the Brothers Grimm with sparkle, confidence, and sass.” Sierra Wood reacts during a rehearsal of “Snow White.” Seated, left to right, are Anjule McNamara as the Mirror, Eve Smyth as the queen and Aidan Peterson. Dials has worked with Camelot Theater and the Green Room, as well as Oregon Stage Works. Featured young actors from the Oregon Stage Works Acting Academy include Snow White Sophie Javna and the Dwarfs Sierra Allegra Wood, Njyhalo Pavati, Sean Whaley, Isabelle Schuler, Miko Hughes and Smyth’s daughter, Aidan Peterson, who is “happy to be performing with her Mommy again.” Peterson made her stage debut at the age of seven weeks when she played the door prize for an orphanage.
